Poll: Ending Is Such Sweet Sorrow (May 26, 2004)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
It's poll time again. The winner of the last poll, What's Your Favorite Furball Style?, was Wing Commander III with 49.03% of the vote. It was followed by WC2 (25.6%), WC4 (9.35%), WC1 (6.29%), Academy (4.95%) and the movie (4.79%). Our next poll question asks "Which game had the best ending sequence?" Here's a quick rundown of your options. Be warned, descriptions contain spoilers for each game. If you haven't played Wing Commander III yet, stop reading now.
Wing Commander: Fighters battle in space as the Tiger's Claw moves in on the last Kilrathi planet in the Vega Sector!
Wing Commander II: Blair is made a Colonel again, he receives a big cinematic kiss from Angel... but Thrakhath vows revenge!
Wing Commander III: Kilrah explodes, Melek surrenders and Blair returns to Earth for a well deserved vacation.
Wing Commander IV: Climactic trial scene convicts Tolwyn. Blair becomes a flight instructor or an Admiral.
Prophecy: Blair gives his life to stop the Nephilim - but for how long? Casey and Stiletto look to the future together.
Secret Ops: The second Nephilim gate is captured. Admiral Rayak and Governor Cavazos plot the next operation.
Privateer: Admiral Terrel is grateful for your help... enough to read you the games credits.
Privateer 2: Lev's insane younger brother meets a bad end - but the Kindred is yours!

Is there even any question? Wing Commander IV's ending was probably the greatest piece of computer game cinema ever.

I still get shivers when think about Tolwyn's trial. Brrrr.

From a cinematic point of view, WC4 is clearly the best. But I voted from a storyline perspective - which ending felt the best?

I loved the ending of SO2 when we were finally approved of by Tolwyn and still had a war to fight...

WC4 was cinematically the best I agree as well, I still love the trial scene and Chris Robert's line...seems to relate to WC sometimes (especially talking about the most annoying missions)...however, I think we've proven the WC community can go on....

WC4 is cinematically best, I'd agree.
But WC3 was just soo much more heroic for the player.
However my pick would go for Privateer 2 - The Darkening. While the whole game wasn't as immersive as WC3 or WC4 and the ending wasn't all that long (or full of special effects) it was the most 'emotional' IMHO.

I'd go with Armada's ending.. Nothing like blowing up Kilrah without the help of any Temblor or Behemoth. Or blowing up Earth likewise. Unfortunately we already had too many options, and everyone is just going to vote for WC3/4 anyway.

I always did wonder what kind of weapon was used to do this. Seems planet-killing weaponry is more common than one might think.

Actually, I went for WC2. WC3 was great in that the Kilrathi War was over, but it felt a bit dodgy seeing Blair in a shuttle. I don't know what else they could have done, but when I was voting, that was the scene I thought of when I thought of WC3.

"Oh, and one more thing."

I have to admit, it was very nice hearing that for the first time. [I suppose there wasn't any other place for Origin to put the credits, so it was kinda funny having the admiral read them out.] As far as admirals go, Terrell was a pretty cool guy.

I think it was just supposed to be Nukes. :)

Well, I suppose the shuttle scene could be something of a disappointment if you expected more than that. But at the same time, given what happened to Blair afterwards, this was the closest they could get to a happy ending.

(though showing Blair drunk out of his mind would sure have made for a more... interesting... ending ;))

I agree that WCIV was the best cinematically, but WCIII marked the end of a long road; One that started in a Hornet with "Spirit" on your wing.
