POL is short for Privateer Online, much like "UO" is used for Ultima Online (presumably the "L" is added to avoid any of several unkind associations with the initials PO, which I won't get into here).
Nothing solid has been announced by Origin/EA just yet, but little bits and pieces of information that've gathered over the last year or so generally point to a massively multiplayer universe based on the Privateer series, not unlike "UO in space", though that's a severe oversimplification.
