New Crossbow

Perhaps have the ship fly from behind the camera, rotate, and land, as in the landing sequences on the Concordia, and then have the tech in front of the ship between the pods.

Heh, poor ol´Eder would work forever to do a cutscene like that. :p

Don´t worry, Eder, I´ve got a *technical* answer for that suggestion: The Firekka´s hangar is too small for a fighter to fly rotating inside it.

Im thinking that the Crossbows will not be flying off the Firekka anyways. At least I hope not, for the Firekkas sake. Putting a sqaudron of Crossbows on an escort carrier wouldnt leave much room for anything else, hence why the Tarawa had modified Sabres as it primary bombers instead of dedicated bomber-craft.

If you manage to get a Crossbow squadron in Standoff, they *will* fly off the Firekka. Besides, Crossbows are only 38cm bigger than Sabres. Fitting a Broadsword there would be a challenge, though.

I think part of the goal of the Crossbow was to design a bomber similar to the Broadsword that could serve off of smaller ships -- like the Waterloo-class ships in Special Operations 1 or the CVEs from the novels.

Crossbows are practically the same length than Sabres, and they're shorter (height-wise) and narrower. As LOAF said, it might have been meant to be used on smaller ships from the start... a proper answer to the CVE's problem (instead of having to use modified Sabres).

After all, the Gettysburg could fit a squadron's amout of Crossbows while keeping a lot of light fighters. IIRC, wasn't the Gettysburg a cruisers with smaller complement than a CVE?

Edit: Talking about restrictions, the Gettysburg only carried light fighters, while the Firekka will have Rapiers, Gladii and maybe Sabres. Still, the Gettysburg carried Crossbows, so why shouldn't the Firekka be able to do aswell?

Yes, I believe it had a complement of 40 compared to the CVE's 45... but the CVE's restrictions might be different, and more related to the size of the fighters, since the CVE is a glued-together ship with a tiny flight deck.

Hooray for cleaner textures! :) Great stuff, Eder.

I just wonder about the Crossbow's (in-universe) design though. I remember the Claw's pilots talking about the lack of visibility in the Dralthi cockpit and that was with flat wings. With the Crossbows's big cannon mounts, it's even worse than the Dralthi. They (Origin) really didn't have to make it look that much like a giant crossbow weapon, did they? ;)

Does the Broadswors like like a broadsword weapon?

Anyway, the vision in WC2 is no problem, just turn off the cockpit :p . I think that what takes majority of the cockpit visuability is its torpedo pods, but you don't need much vision on the sides when against against capships, do you?

The similarity between name and shape is not a general rule. And cockpits can't be 'switched off' in WC2 DOS or 'reality'. I was looking for a possible in-universe explanation.

Speaking of cleaner textures, will that policy apply to the Morningstar as well? ;)

Thank you, thank you.

As far as Standoff is concerned, you can pick the Sabre instead. :D I believe that's about the extent of what a pilot could do about the Crossbow's visibility, in-universe. :p (Of course, you gotta have enough Sabres left or it doesn't show up in the ship selector screen.)

Yeah, I believe the new Crossbow was the equivalent of me shooting myself in the foot when it comes to that question. :p I'm considering retexturing the Morningstar, but that's hardly a priority... specially since I'd have to retexture the Wraith too. (In either case, Bradshaw will rarely run into any Morningstars - like one wing during the whole campaign - and he won't run into any Wraiths, so it's no big deal if the textures stay outdated. :p)

I believe he was referring to WC2KS. IIRC, you can switch cockpits off there.

That's correct.

Seriously, your texturing looks beatiful, but I'd prfer to see progress on the first episode. I don't think any experimental super-stuff is used in it, yet, I have one question. If the Crossbow (pre-SO1) is still in it's testing phase, how can there be a Morningstar wing (post-SO2)? Or are those two very close together timely?

Anyway, I can't wait to fly the Raper II. This thing is one of my favourites for WC2, but I never really liked the WC2 Sabre, not really the ship you want for K'Tithrak Mang. It's gun conveargence is horrible (That matters a lot for WC2, heck, I hit more stuff with my Rapier) and pansy shields good for what the Stiletto's shields do in Standoff. But Standoff's Sabre is really cool: You actually hit something, your shields are still a bit weak, but at least you get actual armor protection, so it becomes a very aggressive-style ship.

I dream all day of Standoff, make it come true.

Please.

We're making progress, slow and steady, which is the way we had planned it to be, so everything's under control. :)

The two are close, but I don't think they are that close. The idea is that Morningstars are still prototypes in Standoff... there's one squadron aboard the Concordia, and that's it. Crossbows are not in testing phase - as I said, they're just out of prototype testing, which means that they're being mass produced and sent out to squadrons (or rather, mass production had started, then the truce was signed, and mass production was halted - but there are already a few Crossbow squadrons around, and most of them haven't even had time to see any real action... the Firekka in particular will only get a squadron of Crossbows due to bizarre twists of fate).

We actually tried to remain pretty faithful to WC2's Sabre. IIRC, the shield boost is very slight and the gun convergence was just something we used everywhere it was needed. The Rapier II feels pretty cool, too.

We have every intention of doing so.

I heard the rumors of the Crossbow-transport-which-destination-gets-destroyed-so-the-Firekka-claims-the-ships plot for that.

Hmmm, the Wild Eagles probably were the first Morningstar squadron in existance, does this mean there will be Maniac cameos?

It's great to hear from you, by the way.

We do have a few different cameos planned, but for various reasons Maniac is not one of them.

(in any case, the Wild Eagles were just a test pilot squadron - although they did fly combat missions in SO2, I would assume that they were not a combat unit as such, and spent most of their time at test facilities)

Or are those two very close together timely?

They are, indeed. The start of Special Ops 1 claims that Jazz' trial is in one week... and that's what Special Ops 2 opens with.

The two are close, but I don't think they are that close. The idea is that Morningstars are still prototypes in Standoff... there's one squadron aboard the Concordia, and that's it. This all seems reasonable. Crossbow squadrons start coming online during the course of Special Ops 1 -- they talk about Olympus recieving them during the Ghorah Khar B briefing. The Wing Commander Academy manual (written just a bit later in 2667) claims that both are in service -- and that the Morningstar is the Confederation's "premiere anti-capital ship fighter" (or somesuch).
