1. So.. I'm flying along a really REALLY long mission. 23
nav points out and back. Kill dozens of pirates, save
the primary. On the way back, get into a middle of
a big ole' firefight --

and the game freezes. Everything stops moving, usually
right when somebody either a) jumps in or b) starts blazing
away with guns.

It never starts up again. It just stays hung. I have
to hard-reset my system, and Win98 does *not* like that.

Is there anyway to prevent this?

2. Did the Delivery missions. Y'know -- Pick up
a package on Anhur and Deliver it to the hospital
on Crius. Pick up package and take it back. Dropped
off package again. Finished the sequence.

Only ... the diary entry still reads "Get this to
Angus on Anhur."

What has happened? Why hasn't the diary entry cleared?
Does this mean I can no longer get cinematic plots until
I can clear the entry?

I think you must be very near the planet when you drop the package. You get immediately an email when you dropped it correctly IIRC.

Sometimes in the PAD, the previous mission listing will still be displayed in your mission notes, but you already completed the mission, this is just a small bug thing that means nothing. It should clear out of the list after awhile.

Same damn thing happens to me. Funny thing is, it never used to happen, but only happened after I installed the game recently, after a few months of it off my computer.

You're just playing, the game will freeze, but the music keeps playing? I'd better download that patch...

The patch will help the "freeze up" problems, as to the PAD mission listing, it does nothing for that. There is a FAQ with info on that.

OOPS! Patch didn't work.

Reason: Patch is for Dos version of game. I own the
Win95 version of the game. At first the patch
wouldn't install at all, but after some effort I was
able to patch DOS code into Win95, with the expected
result. LOAF, you owe me $38.

HA HA! Just kidding about the last. I was able to
re-install the original executable and restore
the game to its original state. Which is fine, except
it still crashes after about 20 or so nav points.
I suspect a memory allocation bug.

I have managed to alleviate the problem by switching
off "high detail". But this is only a partial solution,
as I must get the crash rate down to once every
few days in order to consider this game really playable.
*I* can survive a crash, but Windows 95 and it's write-behind caches can be quite fickle if badly treated.

In any case, I'm still livin' large in Crashland. :)

Any further tips and suggestions are welcome. All I
can think to do at this point is to disable all options
that can be disabled and hope that lifts the processing
burden enough that I don't crash any more.

Only thing I can think of is maybe the data.tre file or files somehow got corrupt during install or other. Perhaps try to copy the tre files again, or try a reinstall over the existing install. It could be something with current peripherial drivers and the game doesnt work well with them. Maybe some tweaking in your mem allocations or other. Unfortunately, I dont have the Win9x ver, but the Dos ver. Hope you get it worked out!

Thanks. I seem to have solved the problem by
disabling the in-flight music. The game still
crashes VERY occasionally, but at an acceptable
rate. In addition, when it crashes it only
kills itself, rather than taking the whole
system with it. So I'm much happier than I was
yesterday.
