Milk Run...

I was referencing Milk Run itself when I commented on the status of a corvette in ConFleet... just larger than a bomber, much cheaper than a destroyer. Since Confed captains *frigates* with Lieutenants, they're not likely to assign a Naval Captain to a corvette.

WC *often* swaps around ranks, though -- and it seems fairly routine for people to switch between services.

But then, maybe he's not a captain at all -- maybe he's being called that because his position is Captain of the corvette... will look into this when I find a copy of ER (at work right now, only have a copy of FC;)).

harcourt a man and a mystery...lol

Yeah, I'd also believe that Harcourt is just called Captain cause he's the skipper of the ship. It would be most fiiting if he would be a Lieutenant, although the book says otherwise. Well, great book anyway.

ranks, ranks, ranks

I hope you find something. I just reread the whole Milk Run Part but I couldn't find a clear answer to the subject. Once it is said that he is a mere captain indicating Space Force on another occasion it is said that normally Lieutenants would have that job (if Harcourt is a SF Captain he would be of equal rank). Maybe the ConFed should use the same ranking system for both services ?!

It is a lot easier today, I mean there is no chance that you would mix up Air Force and Navy...lol

I'd like to point out that Han Solo was always called Captain, since he was the Captain of the Millennium Falcon. Yeah, ok, so that's not a completely legit source for ranking but leave me be...

Yeah, even if someone of higher rank comes aboard. At social events, I believe, an Army captain is downgraded one rank rather than be called the name reserved for the skipper. If ANOTHER Naval captain comes aboard, that captain is called "Commodore", even if the skipper is a lieutenant.

Likewise, the captain is the overlord of the ship...anyone of equal or lesser rank is forced to listen to them. A Space Force colonel is lesser than the captain, at least while they're on board the ship. The second they step off, the colonel is once again square with the captain.

downgraded

I think the army captain would be called Major, cause you cannot "demote" him, same is true as stated for the naval captain.

Nice anecdote in a higly controversial but great novel:

Heinleins "Starship Troopers".

The army would never have a problem with that kind of government. I mean citizenship is only granted by service
;-)

I think you're right...besides, I got it from ST. Heinlein was a huge military buff, and borrowed a large amount of it for his work...

Starship Troopers was dull. And the movie they based off of it was terrible. *shuddering at the thought of Denise Richards and Casper van Dien in the same movie*

You know, screw it, I still say Stasheff didn't know the ranking system. ;)

I LOVE both the book and the movie. And to be fair, in 1959 a book that seemingly promotes facism was controversial. Cause it was.

heinlein

As a german I have to live with our country's past and from secondary school onwards the topic get's discussed, analyzed and so on and so on.
Fascism doesn't emanate from the Nazis though but from the Romans. It was the symbol of the judges. "Fasces" is a lot of wheat around an axe and was carried in front of the judges. Fascism is in itself a highly hirarchical structure.

Nationalsocialism is madness, cause it takes this system and perverts is with anti humanitarian idealsim.

Sigh...okay I shouldn't lecture you about politics (I sound like Quarto...grin...no offense meant).

I think Heinleins book is very good and controversial, cause it states for example in 1959 that the U.S. will have problems with youth criminality at a high rate.

Heinlein states that without proper punishment no sense of moral can be build. He uses the word:

Juvenile delinquent

and says there is no such thing, either you are juvenile and therefore "innocent" and cannot held responsible fully for what you do or you are a delinquent and quite able to understand your deeds and have to accept the resulting consequences. The book is about responsibility and dedication.

Okay, no one would like to have a society that way but to think about it is worth the reading. Well, reading is always good as far as I am concerned.

Oh by the way Bandit LOAF, you seem to have very interesting cardbox labels...just kidding

See, controversial means that people actually argued about it (aside from the Sci Fi community, who argue about anything. There are people arguing about what shade of red the Star Trek II uniforms were *right now*). SST does talk about fascism and what-not, but in 1959 nobody *cared* -- it's one of Heinlens "juvenile" novels, so people dismissed it as being for teens. It's also not specifically stating that the US will have problems with youth criminals any more than 2001 is stating that we'll have problems with space-monoliths...

And I *do* have interesting box labels! I've bought massive numbers of books from the library book sale over the year, and so I have dozens of boxes that I store them in... but for some reason they're all liquor boxes or boxes marked "ADULT BOOKS"... prompting odd stares from visitors...

There are also people arguing about shit like Hayden Christensen being too short to play Anakin or Christopher Lee being too old to play a Sith over in the SW community. Very heatedly, I might add. Hell, we're still arguing about if the WCM or P2 fit into the WC universe.

Yeah, LOAF, those are interesting cardboard box labels. Hey, when I moved into my new house, some of my stuff was in an Everclear box.

Hey! I'll have you know that impersonating and/or sounding like Quarto, whether intentionally or accidentally, is a federal offence with a maximum penalty of a $5000 fine and/or 5 years inprisonment!
(That is to say, no offence taken :))
