Making the Game: Mission E4b (March 19, 2009)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
E4b is the losing alternative to the T'lan Meth 4a strike -- a sad mission, in comparison. Whoever wrote these mission notes, though, sure loved using 'hose' as a verb; I count eight uses...

These updates are thanks to John "Captain Johnny" Guentzel, who provided several CD image archives of material used by the Wing Commander Prophecy development team!

I think I would have liked the hug given by Maniac if you rescue the pilot to be kept in the game. I guess Maniac was supposed to be the unfriendly arrogant comic relief but still, I though that would have been a nice touch. After all, Maniac does get a bit wiser with the years.

I don't know... Maniac just doesn't seem to be the overly affectionate sort of pilot to me - his WC1/2 or WC3/4/P incarnations. I think having Maniac struggling to say "Thank you" to Casey after being counselled over losing two rookie pilots was as close to him showing any signs of affection as there will be - and that's good enough for me.

That's how he's portrayed yes, but still - I mean, from what I recall from WC1 and WCATV, he is affected by people's deaths and I think that would have showed it without breaking his character. Oh well, I forgot about his "Thank you" (so to say) to Casey and then yes, I guess that's fine enough.

I'm not saying Maniac isn't, just that he doesn't show it very often. Especially not as the older pilot that he is in Prophecy.

But I certainly appreciate what you're saying. It would be nice if he could show a little vulnerability behind that facade of "hot air" once in a while.

"Casey! My only friend. My only friend."

I thought his inebriation may have some part to play in this scene, but you're right, it's about as touching as we've ever seen Maniac (in his older years).

Also I think it's a very fitting reaction for Maniac...he does care for flying but he does not want to carry responsibilty for other people's lives on his shoulders.
