Making the Game: Captain Report (September 28, 2009)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
We're moving on from Wing Commander Prophecy to a limited amount of material from its sequel, Wing Commander Secret Ops. Primarily, we'll be looking at draft and collected versions of the famous web fiction -- but there will be some other treats included. This document is an earlier version of all Captain Murkins' (known here as Captain [Name]) 'pre-series' reports. The most interesting thing is that they seem to have been originally developed as something much more interactive; some of the later updates include optional text that would be displayed depending on overall performance rather than just whether or not the previous series was won.

These updates are thanks to John "Captain Johnny" Guentzel, who provided several CD image archives of material used by the Wing Commander Prophecy development team!

Maybe, but we were still freaking out of our minds in 1998 that we were getting brand new Wing Commander material four days a week. And the material that we did get was influenced by what we did the prior week.

I admit, it was really cool, I just wish it had been hardcoded into the game in some way, so you didn't have to quit the game to read your email. It's a good thing the emails were archived, or they would have been lost when EA took down the website.

They actually developed a fiction viewer for Secret Ops Gold, which EA Germany demanded be dropped from the product.

The standoff folks figured out how to put these kinds of things into their mod. It probably would be a worthy addition to the highres/enhancement pack to make a fiction viewer accessible from one of the Cerberus' computer screens... or even for them to show up on a secondary page after the stats screen from your previous mission. I bet they could make a video capture of the original website's flash animation of the distress signal and make that play at the start of the game.

I don't know for sure (and neither did the developers). The only reasonable theory I've come up with is that altering the game to add all the fiction would mean it would need to go through the German ratings process a second time.

It was a free download game, did it even receive any kind of rating? Or were they just too lazy to translate that much text for a free game?
Sucks anyway.

This was for the 'Prophecy Gold' re-release.

The website *was* translated and made available in German for the Secret Ops event.
