I thought those three ran to the Concordia to get her on her way, while Long got into the trainer with a pilot and signaled Concordia to hold station per page 271 - Turner tells the carrier's XO that this was because he (Long) wanted to board, and deliberately 'ignores' the order, which may have resulted in Long's death. But we CAN hold Turner accountable for Long's death, since he did keep the carrier from waiting up for her.

Yes, they ran to the Concordia... and then illegally ordered her online and used her to escape from the battle. Long died with his fleet, Turner escaped with a precious carrier in order to fight another day.

Long might have survived longer, had the orders arrived on time - the first breakdown was when the message missed the outgoing courier, then after that got filed in a drawer after arriving at McAuliffe during the spin-up for the Confederation Day celebrations. Had they shown up a few days earlier, and had Long been able to follow them ('Cancel all leaves, get everyone on station'), he may have indeed died on the bridge of a battleship rather than (probably) being shot down in orbit around McAuliffe.
