Let's replay WC....as a community!

Hey guys,

With all the new threads popping up it got my mind going. We are discussing and analyzing all aspects of WC, well why not refresh all of our memories?

What I'm proposing is that sometime in the New Year (perhaps mid-January?) we have a weekly replay. We'll start with WC1 and play maybe 4 or 5 missions a week then log onto the CZ to discuss those missions. Depending on what people think we could also extend it to a two week period or whatever works.

I figure this way we could replay the main games in several months time and all enjoy playing them in unison sharing war stories and tactics.

I proposed the start date for mid-January because I still need to acquire a CD copy of WC1 Deluxe, which I have found on ebay. So after Christmas when money isn't such an issue I'm going to grab it along with a few other WC things.

What's everybody think? I think it would be a great reason for all of us to replay the series as well as have a great time doing it sharing stories of battle.

I'm already replaying them, so I've got a head start! Over the last couple weeks, I ran through WC 1 and 2 (and the SMs/SOs). Right now I want to get in some Armada, but I'm having the ubiquitous flightstick calibration trouble. :( Even with HCl's patch, too, and the latest DosBox. Ths calibration is seeing Hat-Right and Hat-Down as button pushes, and not hat-buttons - despite being configured correctly in both Windows and DosBox.

EDIT: Okay, I got it to work - I selected YES for 'Is there a Thrustmaster flightstick attached?' at the end of the installation the first time. I ran install again, and selected NO. Now the hat doesn't work, but at least I can fly! ... Having trouble finding which button on the flightstick fires missiles, though. Can only fire guns and afterburners.

4 or 5 missions a week? C'mon, I'm sure most of us would easily be able to play 4 or 5 missions a day (and I probably could finish any WC game -except perhaps for SO1- within 2 days if I really put my mind into it, but not everyone has that kind of free time).

Anyway, that's a great idea. I think we should play through both the winning paths and the losing paths as well.

I'm sure some of the missions will make epic stories of woe, frustration, and finally triumph. :D

Oh definitely on playing both paths, but just think about WC1. Will everyone spend the time and effort to beat Kursawa 2? or will they just suck it up and head down the losing path?

As for the 4-5 missions a week, I just assumed not everyone has the same amount of time for WC anymore so we would extend it out. It also allows for people to post that entire week instead of just on day 1.

Another possibility of this massive replay is that we could in essence create a new and extremely thorough game guide with the firsthand experience of wingnuts shaping it.

WC1 doesn't present that much of a problem at Kurasawa- you still go on to the next mission, and then you just add in Rostov, THEN Venice (or Hell's Kitchen, if you suck.)

It's a great idea. "Colonel, you are clear to launch" :)

I still can't believe that Kurasawa 2 is still known as "Teh Hardest Mission ever" after so many years of playing. It really shouldn't take most players more than 5 tries to beat it with a little strategy (not counting those of us who can beat it almost every time).

Just wait 'till we get to Hubble's Star 2, Hell's Kitchen 2, Ghorah Khar B4 (and its slightly easier losing version), or some UE missions.

The problem with Kurasawa is NOT your survival, obviously. I can handle extremely tough missions just fine and come out alive. The problem is saving something else. THAT is what is so hard for many pilots- I'm too concerned about my own skin, or making kills, and I hate escort missions of any sort. Still, it isn't the hardest mission ever- just a very hard one for certain pilot types.

I think this is a great idea! I would propose that we don't allow separate time for losing missions though. It might be interesting to hear from different pilots and where they ended up.

Also, I would suggest as short of time spans as is reasonable for how long we allow for missions: a mission a day maybe? That way people that don't have one of the games won't lose interest. People that can't play every day could then catch up by playing 3 in a day, etc. For instance, I don't have WC2, so I wouldn't be able to participate for the month or two it takes to beat that game. Someone who didn't have WC3 would have to wait a LONG time.

Not everyone has the same amount of free time so I figured a slightly longer time span would allow everyone to participate. I figure 5-8 missions a week would be manageable for most.

Another reason for doing this was to spur people into getting the games they are missing :D

They aren't very expensive nowadays. I found WC1 Deluxe/WC2 Deluxe on one CD just yesterday for $8 (which I immediately ordered since WC1 DOS is the last DOS version I need). Just do a quick search, very few are expensive, if you dug around and with some luck, you could probably grab almost every game in the series for less than $150 if not less.

I'm on part-time minimum wage and have to help pay for my senior trip as well as 30 other things, and maybe a little for college- if only $150 were so easy to save up. By the time I even get $20 I'm probably feeling deprived of mountain dew or taco bell, and staying strong is...so...hard...~~~.

That, and I need to get a graphics card so I can play Phantasy Star Universe, which I already have for $10. I'm sick of integrated!

Just thought of another fun side thing to do if we decide to play the games as a community.. We could have a 'Christopher Blair' (or 'Maniac'!?) competition for those playing through on the nightmare difficulties (or in games that have only one difficulty everyone can participate). Basically we try to play as far as we can get without replaying a mission or dying and report on how far we made it and which path we ended on. Then of course after we die, we can simply play through the game where we left off and comment like the rest of the posters.

It would be interesting to see who if anyone survives each game.. and if someone makes it through to win a whole game we can call him 'ace of aces' (or liar of liars?). If someone wins through ALL the games we can ban them for being a huge liar :D. It would also be interesting to read reports on how we died: collided into the carrier, too close to a skipper missile, Maniac shot me, etc..

Could also do some kind of "kills" competition as well. Take screenshots of the killboard as you advance.

If there's one thing the CIC needs it's more killboards. I've got a fever and the only prescription is more killboards :D

Keep one finger on the eject button, kids. You'll need it.

Incidentally, I was playing through WC1 under that idea today, and I was going in a Rapier at top speed. Asteroid at max velocity came straight for me, I saw it for half a second.

Which brings me to quite the point- if we have "stupid" deaths due to impatience, would you count that against us? I for one do NOT enjoy asteroids, and I often speed up for convenience. My suspicion is that you'll hold us to it regardless =P.

At any rate, I'm all for Maniac mode. It's a good idea, and it shows us WHY Blair needed pilgrim powers =P
