Legends Never Die: A Wing Commander Story

By Joshua "Sylvester" Dworkin

Prologue:

September 2682. The war with the Nephilim enemy has gone on for a trace more than a year now. Battle rages on through the former worlds of the Kilrathi and close to home in Vega sector. The forces of the Terran Confederation, the Union of Border Worlds and the Kilrathi Planetary Alliance fight the bugs on all fronts. For the past few months, the Border Worlds has been pushed back farther and farther into their own territory. The antiquated hand me down technology possesed by the valiant defenders is no mach for the advanced and deadly technology of the Nephilim. The Border Worlds are in desperate need for more ships. Confed, losing vessels on all fronts has no ships to spare and the shipyards of the Border Worlds can not produce a modern capital ship. However, Confed did make a suggestion.

The salvage craft sped along water towards a large land mass directly ahead. Skimming the surface of the water, the ship speeds on to the north, towards its target. Coming around a sandy knoll, the salvage team finally glimsed its target. The blackened and scared hull of the vessel protruded from the water and the men were a bit taken aback to its size. Originally declared a total loss, it would be their turn now to raise it back into the heavens. They circled the ship and began thaking readings. The ships keel and main structure was intact, however, the engines and interior would have to be completely rebuilt. The vessle had survived remarkedly well conmsidering the amount of time that it had been there. Touching down on the white sand, the salvage team disembarked from their landing craft and began to set up camp. By dusk, the team had colmpleted their encampment and called in the full unit, they would need the help because much work would be done tommorow.

At daybreak, the salvage unit set to work on the battered starship. They went inside and took initial measurements of the interior of the old vessel and by noon, teams were busy around the ship, rebuilding it’s structural integrity. Through the month the men worked and by October, the ship had been restored to an airtight status.
On the 5th of October, the real test came. A large salvage vessel, the BWS Hoist hovered over the hull of the ship. The powerful tug dropped large durasteel cables to the vessel. The lines were secured and the all clear was. A tremendous roar erupted as the engines of the mighty salvage vessel strained with exertion. The engines were very powerful but it took a lot of energy to lift seventy two thousand tons.
The Hoist was pulling on the stern lines only to right the scarred hulk. Suddenly, the aft end of the carrier began to swing upwards. As it passed level, the Hoist pulled the lines straight up. The ship began to rise slowly. The Hoist gave one last pull and the old vessel began to rise above the waves. The men looked on at the rising hulk, the last thing they could make out on the dark vessel was the large number sixty five emblazoned on the hull.As the Hoist steadily rised above the planet Vespus, it carried with it the battered hull of the TCS Concordia into space towards the repair ship Phenoix and restoration.
High above the surface of Vespus, it was the job of the crew of the Phenoix, a large team of technicians and salvage experts, to restore the Concordia so that it may once again travel through jumpspace. The crews installed the new generator on board so the ship had at least partial power restored and brought the engines that could be salvaged back on line. Limited defesive weapornry was brought online and the techs restored minimal shields. Bracing was added to weakened sections of the hull to make it strong enough to be towed through a jump point. Remaining work had to be done to repair the offensive weaponry and flight deck but the ship could at laest move now.
On the 12th of October, just a week after the raising of the ship, a old Durango class cruiser, the BWS Geronimo jumped insystem. It carried the most essential members of the crew of the Concordia to the repair site in order to oversee the ships last stages of repair. The crew was a mix of all characters, Confederation, Border Worlds and a small contingent from the Kilrathi Alliance would man this proud ship Among them was 1st Lieutenant James “ Cougar” Pollari, an eager young pilot and the ships new master. As the old destroyer sailed past Concordia, this individual had a feeling of déjà vu. After 13 years, Dirk Wright had returned to the Concordia.

I like your introduction of the Concordia but thats about all I can like about it.

1- The Concordia was lost at a point in the Kilrathi War when Confed would have done anything for a good carrier. If they assumed that the Concordia was a total loss with the resources Confed has to restore a capships, you can pretty much write it off.

2- It took all the resources of the Landreich (with the help of the Kilrathi) 3 months IIRC to make the Karga spaceworthy, and its damage was nothing compared to what happened to the Connie. The Concordia crash landed into a planet and was still riddled with fires and explosions days after it went down (assuming travel time for Blair and Paladin) and it gets patched up in a month with the resources of the BW? Not likely, if this was possible, Confed would have done it right after it went down.

Sorry, raising the Concordia is wishful thinking thats not gonna fly.

Okay, It takes a while to get the ship online, say 4 months but these guys are only making her structually strong enough to be towed through a jump point to a shipyard wher she will be fixed and then Stingray will take command of her. Theres about a 1,000 men working on her.

I didn't realize it would take that long to fix the ship.

Your main problem here is that the Concordia is broken in half. this means the main keel, hence, the main structural support, is gone. Considering how ship design is about first laying down the main structural support and *then* building a ship around it, it is very difficult and costly to do something like this to the Concordia. You can't just weld the two halves together and expect to have good results.

I thought we already had a "salvage a badly damaged ship" Wing Commander story. Yea, we do. It's called "False Colors". You should read it sometime.

Oooh, another thing, the peice of the Concordia we can see in WC3 is the bow, where the 65 can plainly be seen.
