Jump Holes in Freelancer

Shaggy

Vice Admiral
I figured I'd post this here since there isn't a dedicated forum for Freelancer, except the Reckoning one. And I couldn't quite figure out where else would be proper to put it.
Anyway I was wondering if anybody has found jump holes in Freelancer. I'm curious as to how to find them and use them. I don't need to know the exact locations of jump holes, cause I kind of like finding new stuff on my own. But I am curious about what sort of clues and such I need to look out for in order to find them.
What level do I need to be at to mount a torpedo launcher on my ship. Cause I just picked up a heavy fighter with Torpedo hardpoint but nobody is selling launchers or torps.

Torpedoes are over rated. A high level mine layer does more damage and fires faster. You can just "hot dog" a cap ship and seed it with mines until it goes kaboom.

Jump holes, from what I've seen, are usually in clouds of junk (debris, asteriods, nebulas) and generaly far away from trade lanes. There are two ways to find them. Get lucky at a bar and pay for info (rare), or go exploring the edges of every system. And trust me, going off the trade lanes can be rewarding. However, it's not until you get into "wild" systems (systems controlled by criminal factions, no jump gates or trade lanes) that you get the really good uber junk and a few easter eggs.

Forget Torps. The cheap ones are useless and by the time you get the good ones (which is after the storyline) you probably won't need them either.

As for jumpholes - have a look at the patrol paths of the ships. Where these paths convert you'll usually find either a base or a jumphole. Of course using a jumphole also give you the location of the other side...

Two Catapult missiles will do as much damage as a single torp, and they travel faster and have a quicker refire rate.
