Long Live the Confederation!
IGN is running an article, The Cruelest Cutscene, running through the history and the future of the Full Motion Video cutscene. It picks out both Wing Commander and Command and Conquer as examples of excellent FMV platforms — for opposite reasons. On Wing Commander:
FMV tends to work best when it aids the game without being the game itself. Wing Commander III managed to pull this off adroitly, and is to be commended for both letting Mark put the ham back in Hamill, and preventing Malcolm McDowell from frightening small children on the streets, if only for a short while. The B-grade cutscenes depicted the story between levels of actual gameplay.

The link is broken. It's nice to finally see someone say something about Wing Commander III as more than merely a mid-90s interactive movie.

Fixed in the forum version, but to edit the news article requires someone with access to that particular module. The list of people with said access doesn't include me.
