Actually, the story's not really all that titillating. Basically, Sappho was a Greek poet who wrote about sex/love/whatever between women, and she happened to live on Lesbos. Still, the information is actually somewhat relevant to Wing Commander, since it comes up in a seminal work of WC fan fiction...

Don't tell the lesbians - their whole objective was to get away from anything seminal.

Lesbians in Wing Commander... some poor fanboy took something pure like WC and made it into a porno? Now I'm sad. :(

However there are certain greek islands that are considered to be favoured holiday places of people with certain sexual orientrations. So...
 
I'm idling and waiting for an update job to continue, so this might not be very deep:
Seeing a lot of lifestyle influence on gaming culture, I sometimes try to make up the philosophy or values that's behind a game (or book, or TV series, or song, etc.) - wich seems easy for WC: Valor, honor, friendship, trust and so on are the biggies...

...but what about relationship values? It's that war-situation motif of "don't get too close" (thankfully less blatant in the games than in the movie), but the general relationship structure seems pretty conventional to me. But I don't survey the whole canon (I just ordered all the novels, after more than 10 years, can you imagine?) - so there might be something more complex around.

I had a lot of hilarious times playing the sims non-seriously with friends but that got old I didn't have a lot of fun trying to play the game seriously. I don't hate it, I just think they strangled the life out of it with all the expansions and now a sequel.
 
"Non-seriously" is a perfectly valid way to enjoy The Sims. Most people (except the obsessive lunatic fringe who like to see how many different virtual wallpaper patterns they can acquire) use it as a bit of escapist fantasy. As Maxis would claim to tell you, their software are "toys", not games--they don't give you a set of rules to tell you how to play their games, they just provide a fun bit of software "to see what happens". You can dismiss it as a bunch of marketing-speak, but after playing numerous SimXYZ titles, I can really see their point.
