How do the Kilrathi go from the end of SO2 to the False Armistice?

After having completed WC2: SO2 again, I'm left puzzled. The story clearly ends with the Kilrathi victorious with the destruction of the 6th Battle Fleet and the retreat of Confed from the Deneb sector, and with the Emperor believing that "nothing can stop us from conquering Terra now".

So how exactly does this work with the whole "Kilrathi are hard pressed and Confed has the upper hand" deal with the Kilrathi coming up with the armistice ploy to gain the upper hand?

Is Fleet Action really compatible with the games, or does it require handwawing?

At the start of Forstchens novel "Endrun" thats basically the situation. The Kilrathi have the upper hand with 2 times as many carriers as Confed and press on to victory. Thats where the "Endrun" story picks up with Tarawa going to Kilrah destroying the cruiser shipyard and several almost finished new carriers and the Battle of Vukar Tag that sees several Kilrathi carriers down, evening out the odds a bit in Confeds favour. In "Fleet Action" the new "Escort carrier raiders" have wrecked havoc on the Kilrathi supply lines and they start running short on Carriers as they cant shift them in and out of service, experiencing technical malfunctions etc. because of stressed supply lines etc.. We also learn that this shortage on supplies, pilots etc. is also due to the Emperors Clan building a secret super fleet of Hakaga class carriers that strain the Kilrathi war effort against the humans.

The armistice basically is a ruse to gain time on the Kilrathi part to put those carriers into service - though believeable because Confed knows that they have placed some heavy blows on the frontline Kilrathi forces.

Fleet Action syncs perfectly with the games - it is the direct setup for the situation presented in the beginning of Wing Commander 3 (copies of Fleet Action were included in certain editions of WC3). But what you're missing are the events of the novel End Run, which takes place directly between SO2 and Fleet Action. A basic overview of events in ER & FA are mentioned in WC3's Victory Streak timeline. You can also read about them in the Arena Star*Soldier Timeline: http://images.ea.com/ea/arcade/draft2cRGB.pdf They are the material from 2667 & 2668.

Good, thanks for the responses.

It still doesn't make any sense to me why exactly the Confed would start mothballing and demilitarising so soon - Mandarins must have infiltrated the administration, it's that silly and irresponsible. It's like none of them are even considering the possibility of a Kilrathi attack.

Well thats basically what happened. The Foreign minister was quasi blackmailed with the live of her captured son by the Kilrathi and drove the Confed administartion into the armistice - with public support swinging heavily in favour of a peace deal (remember Confed is a democracy after all). Mothballing was part of the armistice deal - the Kilrathi mothballed part of their fleet too - though they kept their new fleet secret at a remote position of their Empire - demilitarization and arms reductions aint that special in peace deals - though what Forstchen in his novels probably didnt realy get right is that historically such agreements do not fit with the "Total war" setting that the Human-Kilrathi war was - but thats where storytelling overrules geo(or is it stellar)political plausibility.

Have you read Fleet Action?

It goes into details about why Confed does what it does that I won't get into if you haven't read the book.

Nah, I haven't. I settled for the wikipedia article, as I don't want to delay my WC series playthrough this time through (I restarted and am now at Standoff again....finally. This time I've gone through all the games without "cheating" ie. retrying so that I get the winning paths).

For any serious wingnut all the novels are must haves...they do an excellent job of filling in parts of the universe the games cannot really touch.

Hmmm. Maybe when I replay the games again?
Of course, too bad I already spoiled myself with the wikipedia articles.

Wikipedia articles don't come close to replacing the real thing (not any more than reading the wikipedia article would replace the experience of playing a new WC game).

I mean, I spoiled myself, as in already know the plot outline and the main twists. It seriously detracts from my enjoyment and I can't really suspend my disbelief that I don't already know what happens in advance.

I don't mean that the wikipedia articles are in any way intended to replace the real thing, but they CAN take away from the real thing.

the regular wikipedia isn't always accurate. And one source should never be allowed to color your opinion of anything, especially if it isn't the official one.

If you think a shitty Wiki article on the novels will somehow ruin your enjoyment of them...you are sorely mistaken. We've all told you they are must haves for any wingnut and they aren't expensive. So slap down the $1.68 and pick them up!

Must be terrible never being able to enjoy replaying a game, rewatching a show/movie, or rereading a book.

Oh, dude, seriously. Go to these links. End Run for 94 cents, Fleet Action for 1 cent. Do yourself a favor. If you like Wing Commander, which you obviously do, these are easily the two best novels and they'll answer all your questions in detail.

HAHA Many thanks for that Falcon, I've been putting off buying Fleet Action, but $4 for a near perfect condition copy ($.01 + S/H) was a deal I could not refuse.

Personally... I envy the person who played WC1, WC2, Read End Run and Fleet Action, and then played WC3. You have no idea how much I envy them.

Never re-read a book in my life, indeed - the concept is totally alien to me. Movies and games are a bit different - the story is not everything there, but yes, I rarely rewatch anything on purpose except after many years. In games, a 5-10 year break is good.
