Haven't I Seen You Before? (December 12, 2008)

Long Live the Confederation!
The University of Wisconsin's The Daily Cardinal has published the ordinary game-movies-are-awful article, this time enjoyably titled Video games tend to make for 'Payne'-ful film adaptations. This one differs slightly from the norm by suggesting that modern game films are an excuse to show too much skin -- maybe I need to start watching these things again. It claims Wing Commander is part of an earlier, if still tepid, era:
Beyond the aforementioned, T&A-heavy films, though, video games have not adapted well to films. Who can forget the “Super Mario Bros.” movie from the early ’90s? Well, everyone, actually. Who doesn’t remember sitting with friends watching Freddie Prinze Jr. fly his jet to glory in “Wing Commander?” Actually, statistics show that only three people ever saw “Wing Commander,” and they were all in the film. “Fatal Fury?” Pass. “Street Fighter?” Collegehumor.com did it better on a shoestring budget 13 years later. “Mortal Kombat?” Scorpion beckoned with his calls of “Get over here!” but no one heeded his call.

This guy completely forget the double dragon movie, that actually was the first attempt to convert that generation of arcade games.

Super Mario bros was a disaster, but sure, you can make a realistic action movie where a fat plummer gets sucked in an alternate dimension, and kicks turtles around while he bounces his head into things to gather powerups and save a princess, right?

Albeit fair that movie games rarely deliver, Mortal Kombat did fairly well, all the games characters made their cliche(save shang tsung, the actor was too young), christopher lambert made a great raiden, and the movie had a sequel, and another one in the coming. All-in-all it was fairly done, and even had a tv show.

Wing commander had it around the exact other way, the re-invisioning thing made everything so unrecognisable and vague, that it was not recognisable for the fans in any way(and this is pure my observation, the intro was great, but after the landing of the dilligent on the tigerclaw i got disappointed, since nothing looked familiar(where as in mortal kombat everything was like you had the picture in your mind). Still, stand-alone the WC movie held it's own, It never made an appearance in the theaters here, but was a marketed VHS hit overhere, and I actually modded my DXR2-kit(the dvd-drive and decoder thing that came with WC4) to play my rented DVD region 1 version back, borrowed a projector from my work and watched it through on a borrowed projecter, the movie eventually left me and my mates unsatisfied, since we expected more from it. The movie still gets regular airtime on our tvchannels that mostly show television rerun shows, and movies like krull, dark crystal, etc. Go completely blank on everything, pull some guy from the jungle and put him in front of a screen, show him star wars: A new hope, and WC, and i bet he would point the latter out to be the better movie. Wing commander could have made a hell of a TV-series on par with space above and beyond, and privateer... well, ever watched "Firefly?"

Street fighter has no story, wel one of people fighting local bouts out in championships across the world, the added story of Mr. Bison running an island with super-powered people who are experts in fighting in some way is just plain weird. Just as Van Damme playing a character who is modelled after himself.

Doom was simply a horrid recreation of two scenes from "Aliens",

And let's face it, Max payne is a movie that plays like a novel, and they made a perfect combination of telling the story while still staying true to the look of the games, it's great. Had they done wing commander with that budget and not refocus, the movie would have received better ratings, but expect to find "Max Payne" in the bargain bin for 2 euro's in 6 months, right next to postal, streeet figheter, resident evil, mortal kombat 1 and 2 and the tv series, and the wing commander movie.

Fandom is for the fans, not for the general public. It's like selling stormtrooper outfits in the shelves of a supermarket.
