Good Bye Origin

As far as I'm concerned, Origin died when Lord British held that wake after the collapse of the company years ago. Since then they have just been kept 'undead' to work on a rather dead game, Ultima Online. With Ultima X: Odessy coming out who knows what will happen to it with this type of action by Electronic Arts. Seems like over the past 20 years there has been a survival of the fittest at EA. How many of it's original core game developing companies are still there? 2015, Broderbund Software, Bullfrog, Distinctive Software, Humongous Entertainment, Millenium, Mindcraft and now finally Origin. Who is left? Maxis. Why? Money. Simple as that. I mean you can't blame them, EA needs to generate revenue, but it's a shame. If you're not fit enough, you have your game ideas and liscences taken from you and you are either made defunct or kicked out of the big EA family.
Sounds more like a criminal 'family' more than it does a games publishing family.

Don't forget Westwood! EA killed them off too (RA2 was the last Westwood game made). Not to mention EA plowed the C&C franchise into the ground (Generals does not count as a C&C game). Right now, it seems that the only lines that EA would like to keep are the Sims and the EA sports titles. Everything else can pretty much just kiss off. I miss my Populous, Syndicate, WC, Longbow, Strike Commander, Privateer, and Ultima (not the online variety) games. This is a dark day for gamers everywhere. But the clouds that darken this day have been on the horizon for several years now (basically, ever since Origin was scaled down to just the UO team), so it's no real surprise that Origin has died.

I guess 20+ years of making games is just too long these days.

I like Ricchard Garriot and I admire his work... but the "wake" a few years back was just a huge PR stunt to celebrate the fact that his DNC contract had run out.

(As for other games - Origin has worked on several other projects in the last year or so... none of which made it out. They did a lot of work on a Harry Potter Online project that EA canned.)

Who is left? Maxis.

I believe EA has also relocated Maxis to their LA offices.

I personally am very sad to see Origin gone now.
I remember all those good days when I was younger playing Ultima and Wing Commander, now the great company that created such fantastic worlds is no more.
Does anyone know where Richard Gariott is now. He used to be at Destination Software, though i'm not sure whether he still resides there.

Rest in Peace ORIGIN.
The Players will always continue the legacy.

Actually, you might have missed it.. but last week EA canned Maxis too. Will Wright gets to retain a skeleton crew at the Origin offices for some secret project, but basically Maxis is all in-house now as well. We mentioned it here.

I don't know about that.. it's clearly evident that Generals is a different type of game than some of the previous C&Cs.. yet it's also a lot of fun. Zero Hour is probably my all time favorite C&C experience. That kind of stuff gives me a lot of hope about future WC games. They'll be different, but they might be the best Wing Commander we've ever had.

He's doing that and a lot of work for NCSoft Austin. NCSoft is a big Korean mmorpg developer that's branching out into the North American market this year.

I just became involved in this community and now this happens. It is truly sad.

It surely is sad, but substantively not much changes for this community. We are still proud to celebrate Wing Commander and related items each and every day, and we're still growing each month. We're not going anywhere, and it's never too late to join us.

What's the point of buying a lot of companies... and then cannig them?

Or to have the rights to games like WC, Crusader, Privateer, and not use them?

A: Name Recognition. More people are going to buy a new Sims expansion or the like if it says Maxis somewhere on the box, for instance, instead of just EA. They're using the names to best advantage, cashing in on what these companies built.

B: So they can use them one day to make some inane crapfest shooter.

I am as sad to see Origin go as the rest of you, but I can only look at this in a upbeat prespective. We have already hit rock bottom (No more Origin, not a new WC game in the past few years, etc...). The only way to go is up from here, because once you've hit rock bottom you can't get any lower. As for their long standing motto of: "We Create Worlds", hell just look at us. Probably the most dedicated WC fans there are out there today. They sure have created us a world where we can bicker back and forth, write fan fiction, and do "modifications". Just think of this as a parent (Origin) letting a child (us) go.

That is my farewell speech, Thanks Origin for over ten fun years of games that had great characters such as a Skywalker, a Biff, a Pornstar, the guy who danced around in Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice" video and was a janitor in Joe Dirt, the guy who had a small part annoucing stuff over the intercom at Norad in the movie "War Games", and last but certainly not least one pissed off privateer who no matter how many times he tries to do something good for someone he always gets screwed over(either by having a green egg chase all through out the sector, or by simply having his gun stolen by some of David Kereshs' men).

To put simply: Origin, thank you.

Peace,

Echo
