Going Back to the Drawing Board (March 29, 2010)

The sketch artist who drew up scenes for the Wing Commander Movie has posted two of his cool storyboards. Andrew Wildman has a Wordpress Site with daily musings and some of his professional work. The sequences here appear to picture shots on the Diligent and of the Tiger's Claw's flight deck decompressing. Note that these flow from top to bottom and then left to right.

I'm not so sure they're of a decompressing so much as ideas of what the various jump sequences would look like. Also they seem to flow top to bottom and then right to left and not left to right.

The first image sheet actually has at least three sequences... The far right column is Maniac, Blair, and paladin looking at a 3D map, and then the middle two columns is Blair kissing his Cross just as they jump.

The left hand column labeled 88 corresponds to Scene 88 in the script as follows:
88 INT. TIGER CLAW - VARIOUS TATIONS - MONTAGE

Throughout the ship, men and women are caught, Pompeii-
like, with expressions of fear and bewilderment...

A LONG TRAVELING SHOT past all these crew members.
Then...

The second page seems to be a continuation of this montage... The two far right columns and the top image in the second from the left seem to be Blair and Angel on the Tiger Claw bridge during the same jump into the Ulysses Corridor.

The image at the bottom is scene 293 where Blair jumps his Rapier into Sol System:

293 INT. RAPIER COCKPIT - BLAIR

The vibration is accompanied by a strange noise. BLAIR
continues to spout numbers: 4, 7, 5, 5, 3, 9, 9...as MERLIN
counts down the seconds to jump.

MERLIN
Five seconds to jump. Four, three, two.

Suddenly, time and motion stop. All is silence.

The first column may or may not be a continuation of scene 88, though it's also possibly part of 188 in which Rodriguez seals himself in the torpedo room after it starts decompressing. It's most likely Part of the jump montage though as just before the jump the script references "Two members of the arming crew, Specialists JONES and OLIVIA" locking down a rack of missiles. That still doesn't tell me what that has to do with a shattered window as that picture seems out of place.

Also, I should point out how much I like that Paladin in these sketches looks just like WC1 Paladin.

I'd go for blonde if you look at the second page;

The second scetch page features a woman with clearly dark hair, can't tell if it's supposed to be Rosie or Angel, since I can't make out if it's from the Jump-scene(where Rosie grabs maniac's hand) or the Hangar decompression(since that is clearly featured also). Ofcourse I presume this was before the actors were cast.

I simply meant that you can't possibly determine colour from a black-and-white sketch. ;)

Either way, it's a nice piece to have available.
