Last year it was a joke when The Onion reported on it http://www.theonion.com/content/node/33930

But CNN announced the real life news today http://money.cnn.com/2005/09/14/news/fortune500/gillette/

Gillette has escalated the razor wars yet again, unveiling a new line of razors on Wednesday with five blades and a lubricating strip on both the front and back.

The razor, known as the Fusion, has blades spaced 30 percent closer than Gillette's current MACH3Turbo system. It also has a single blade on the back of the cartridge for shaving sideburns or trimming under the nose.

"Gillette Fusion is more than just a next generation shaving brand, it's the future of shaving," said James M. Kilts, Chairman, President and CEO, The Gillette Company. "Gillette Fusion extends our rich history of innovation. It's a breakthrough platform that will continue to drive our category leadership."

Both shaving systems feature a breakthrough 5 blade Shaving Surface(TM) technology on the front of the cartridge, with blades spaced 30 percent closer together than MACH3 blades. The combination of adding more blades and narrowing the inter-blade span creates a "Shaving Surface" that distributes the shaving force across the blades, resulting in significantly less irritation and more comfort.

I can't wait to start using this breakthrough product.

I hope they have another internet promotion like they did for the Mach 4!

That was for the Schick Quatro. Gillette's promotion is to carpet bomb the country with a new Mach 3 for every American male turning 18. I guess maybe it'll be Fusions from here on out.

Talk about weird timing for a thread. this morning I was looking for one of my trusty single-blade cheapo disposable Bics and discovered that I was fresh out. Then I remenbered the Mach 3 that I got free in the mail literally years ago and found it still in the package. Eh, it's ok but I think I'll stick with the cheap plastic jobs.

So how many blades are enough already? They'll probably stop when their razors look more like Vaktoths than shaving implements.

I didn't even know there was a four-bladed one. And when I bought the Mach 3 I was like, "This seems silly, but I can get used to it." You can't stop progress.

Reminds me of that great SNL "fake" commercial for the Gillette 14 blade razor. "the first blade cuts close, the second a little closer, the third even closer....and on until the 9th blade actually starts removing skin..."

haha

It's getting to the point where adding 1 more blade to a razor is just plain obvious... wasn't there a lawsuit on 4 bladed razors or something?

Yeah, if by obvious, you mean breakthrough.

Yeah, that's the Platinum Mach 14. The 8th blade is just for stabilization. What would really be revolutionary would be a second handle.

I remember that. So funny.

When will the realize their folly?

Yeah, there's really only so much you can do with a razor, and although I think it's kinda of silly, I respect Gillette's marketing team and research department for coming up with ways to convince people to buy their product. That's some pure genius there.
