George Oldziey Releases New WC Inspired Tracks (January 12, 2005)

Long time Origin composer George Oldziey has released a number of new tracks from his upcoming game, Shaiya. They're not just selections from a new game though. There are very distinct Wing Commander influences throughout these samples. It's quite interesting to hear the variations and evolutions of the songs today.
A lot of it is influenced by the Wing Commander music I've previously composed. Actually, I thought it might be fun for you all to try to guess which Wing Commander pieces influenced which Shaiya pieces. Check it out! BTW, the coolest thing is that it's all LIVE ORCHESTRA and CHOIR!!! Something I tried for years to get Origin to support. It was recorded at the Clint Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Bros. just a few week ago. Enjoy!
It's great to hear that Mr. Oldziey is getting to do some cool things these days, and his suggestion for matching up Shaiya to Wing Commander tracks sounds like fun. To take a little load off some of his bandwidth, we've mirrored Battle Full Mix. This one should be quite easy to match up in Wing Commander. Hit the "Discuss" button below if you think you know where other tracks were inspired from. You can find his other samples here.

 Wow these sound fantastic!! I hear where here the similarity to the WC tracks, but I dont think its as easy to hear as is made out! In my opinion I think this from Ultima Ascention is far more like Wing Commander http://www.oldzieymusic.com/tunes/Ultima/Humanoid.mp3 Now tell me that didnt sound like something from WC IV :D

I really hope there will be a soundtrack cd. Hey, you know as much as I liked David Arnolds theme in the movie these tracks really show me how cool the music could have been if George did the music instead.

I think if WC was made nowdays it would probably get a live orchestra, what with G.A.N.G (Game Audio Network Guild). What a damn shame.

Shaiya appears to be Korean. Wonder how he got involved..

Music sounds good (of course), graphics look decent, but I've never been much of an MMORPG fan, esp when I can't understand it :D

There's a pretty strong Korean connection to much of the old Origin gang -- since Richard Garriott's new company is owned by NC Soft.

I was confused at first because the Shaiya section on Oldziey's site was placed amongst the film scores. Just a minor thing, though.

Battle

This one seems to have the most WC influence, I guess this is the reason why it was picked to be mirrored by the CIC.

00:00-00:10: The beginning sounds very much like the first ten seconds of the main title from Wing Commander III. It shouldn't be too hard to notice the similarity here.

00:14-00:33: The "action" part makes me think of a fusion of the 'combat' and 'damaged' music from WCP CD1.

00:51-01:00: The conclusion of the piece reminds me of the WC4 introduction, where Seether 'tests' the Flash-Pak on the Amadeus (03:03-03:13).

Alliance Main Town

00:00-00:04: The beginning reminds me of the first five seconds of Hazardous Duty. Although that piece doesn't seem to be in any WC game, to me it's clearly based from the work for WCP. Admittedly, the resemblence is very slight - the theme is obviously meant to convey the grandeur and heroism of the 'good guys' home town while Hazardous Duty is presumably a combat theme.

Union of Fury Main Town

00:23-00:31: This sections sounds quite like the first six seconds of the 'combat' music from MUSIC4.TRE of WC4.

00:31-00:45: The resemblance might be small, but I'm thinking of the WC4 introduction again here (00:57-01:10 sans glockenspiel and drums).

Union of Fury Frontier Zone

For some reason, this piece makes me think of "The Chase Through Coruscant" from Attack of the Clones more than anything from WC...

Edit:
Death Eater

Everything up to 00:19 makes me think of the scene where the Orcs are 'born' in Lord of the Rings. I'm not familiar with the LotR soundtrack, though.

Post-00:19 sounds very WC-ish, but I can't think of anything specific.

Whoa, Wedge, I hope you have copied that review into Mr. Oldziey's Guestbook...

I just listened to the songs, hummed along a bit, imagined fighters tearing through the void - and then looked at the Shaiya homepage. I somehow have a hard time coming to terms with that music and a fantasy MMORPG.

No - should I? I see no reason to, I'm not in the habit of signing guestbooks.

I think they're quite suitable for an RPG-style game, although I've never played a MMORPG before. Most of the clips sound very grandiose, almost suited to film scores (which happens to be the section they're in on the website) but the Elf Town clip is suitably peaceful and soothing, as the description implies and the Loading music is quite spooky too.

I do think they sound like a fantasy game, even those that do have Wing Commander influences. Very clever indeed. Obviously not all had Wing Commander influences, like one that is clearly a nod toward Lord of the Rings and another to Harry Potter.

And you cant beat that live orchestra and choir. Expertly recorded as well

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but just wondering if anyone has had a go at this game (open beta released December 2007)? I must confess I've found it rather addictive since giving it a go last week, and the only reason I'm not playing it now is because I'm at work. :p

For a free-to-play game, I find it rather impressive even if I am completely new to any sort of on-line gaming, and the soundtrack really helps with the atmosphere. Just my humble opinion.

If anyone cares, the Shaiya soundtrack is freely available from the original Korean site. It's not very big, music is sparse throughout the game, so it's under 18 minutes in total. Still, a nice freebie for Oldziey's fans.

  1. Anthem of Shaiya: Title screen
  2. ?: Random areas in Erina, Alliance of Light territory.
  3. Beika: Human town
  4. Gliter: Major Union of Fury city.
  5. ?
  6. Aelbeageu: Elf town.
  7. Union of Fury Frontier Zone.
  8. Keolloseu: Major Alliance of Light city.
  9. Union of Fury Main Town.
  10. Loading screen between areas.
  11. Dungeon?
  12. Dungeon
  13. ?: Combat music. There's definitely Wing Commander references in this short track.
  14. Another combat track, also used in Alliance of Light frontier zones.
  15. Alliance of Light frontier zone.
  16. Elf Human Creation: Create/load Alliance of Light characters (Humans and Elves).
  17. ?
  18. Battle.
  19. Death Eater: Formerly known as the Nordein and the muscle behind the Union of Fury.
  20. ?
  21. Combat or 'enemy approaching' track.
I could be wrong about these, but I find it easier to appreciate music when I have an idea of what it's supposed to represent.
