If NASA decides to build starships based on WC..... i will laugh my head off... as well... knock the $hit out of them.
If we get into space war? Maybe.... a BIG maybe. Ships of teh future will look more close to Starship Troopers design. Still.. the streamline design would still work.

If we find ourselves in a war in space with anothrr sentient race, our ships would draw inspirations from all science fiction universes, including Wing Commander. Our ships' design will be based on whatever the engineers and scientists that built them found inspiration or grew up with, as long as the designs are practical in a space combat situation. I believe most of us here would at least subconciously make the ships we worked on resemble Wing Commander ships.
