Flight Commander: A Shot in the Dark

hakatsuru

Rear Admiral
Just to let the fans know, Rangers Glory isn't the only mod being produced (although I CANNOT WAIT for it to be released!). I'm currently working on a mod that follows the Confed diversion during Blairs' Temblor bomb run on Kilrah.

You're a pilot on the TCS Invincible, and you start off flying regular missions, untill a kilrathi defector warns of enemy fleet movements to the T'lan Meth system. So Confed gives your ship orders to link up with the TCS Hermes to fight the main kilrathi fleet....

I've got 4 missions already, a search and rescue, an escort mission, a diamond patrol, and another escort mission. Each complete with different ships/objectives

Hopefully, it'll be released by the Holidays if not sooner.

If anyone has ideas or anything, feel free to let me know :).

Awesome, when you're finished I'll be sure to post it on the Flight Commander page, or even include it with the next Flight Commander release.

Excellent! Yeah, I worked out how to create comms last night, so theres gonna be voice acting in it as well.

I mean who will the player character be example ie. WC Standoff is Cpt. William Bradshaw. I know you said a pilot off the Invicible but will you will be a wing commander ,sqaudron commander or just a regular pilot?

I am so excited about this mod. I should reread WC3N.

I really haven't given any thought as to the names of the characters involved... I'm just working out the logistics of the game itself. This is my first attempt at making a mod/programming in general, so I don't know how well it'll go over with the fandom. As much as I have done/seen with the game however, I do like it.

Ok, I was thinking hard last night and came up with some squadron-mates. It will follow the live of Lt Sol Iverson, an experienced fighter pilot, but nothing can prepare him for what he must face ahead. His wingmen are Luis "Phillipine" Olivares, Andrew "Arrow" Topper, and Kevin "Red Baron" Hagedorn. All 4 went through the Academy together, so they have pretty tough bonds between them.

I hope you know that the WC Saga main campaign is based on the exploits of the Hermes, of which the Invincible plays a good role. You sure you want to step on their turf? They already got a long script extending 40 missions and a 300 page fiction novel.

Yeah, I'm aware that they're doing something similar to mine, but I figured it'd be a good way for me to learn some code, and to contribute to the WC fanbase that don't have freespace. I don't want to start anything hostile or negative, I just want to contribute.

Really lookin' forward to WC Saga though!

Speaking with other members of the WC Saga team, as a whole we don't have a problem if another fan project overlaps with ours, even if they do not mesh. We realize that fan projects are just that: the creative work of fans. As such, WC Saga cannot claim the Hermes as "our turf," although we will say that we have an emotional connection with her, after all we have been through! :) Our writers have put a lot of work into this project, and we hope you enjoy it.

I would also like to reiterate that WC Saga is a stand-alone mod. You do not need to own Freespace 2 in order to play it. It will come as a complete .exe based on the FS2 Source Code project. So, don't worry, not having FS2 will not keep you from playing WC Saga.

So, when it all comes down to it, if someone else does a project that involves the Hermes (and they are welcome to), I think all of the fans can be mature enough to expect major differences between the projects. I think we can all live with that, though. Best of luck, hakatsuru!

WC Saga looks cool. At least it is stand alone. When will it come out? I also look forward to all those FC projects.

The official release date for WC Saga is 2669! :) However, I will say that the prologue is coming along well, and we hope for a release in the no-too-distant future. The main campain will take a little longer, but a lot of the work we are doing on the prologue will enable us to release the main campain more quickly. Already, we have 20 of our 40+ main campain missions in a state where they do not require much more modification before they are ready.

That being said, like all fan projects we have to officially say that it will be out when it is ready. Don't worry, though. The prologue will be available soon to whet your appitite for the full release.

Hey, thanks alot, Sphynx! It really means alot to me for someone involved with such a spectacular project to recognize my project and I. My only hopes is that the fans will enjoy the mod I'm making as much as I do.

UPDATE:

Yeah, I'm really swamped with coursework, so I'm gonna push the release date till sometime in January, if I'm not taking winter classes. If I decide on taking winter classes, I'll probably have it out sometime in March then.

Sorry if this poses any inconvenience :)

Boy, if I had a penny for every fan project that got delayed because someone was "swamped with coursework."

Too true. Ranger's Glory has been quiet for a while now. That's why I prefer to announce features after they're already implemented, not before work has started.
