Extract sound

How can I extract audio from a movie file? I have a basic capture program, and want to capture a portion of one of my DVD's (rock song that I can't find on the web ~~~). I know how to capture the video, but I don't know how to get rid of the video and keep the sound and make it into an mp3. I swear I did it in college (by accident if I remember correctly). If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Just use virtualdub mod and go to the menus and pick streams. you should be able to save the audio as an mp3

Alternately look for a demuxing program but then you will still need to convert the AC3 file to MP3
