Expansion Packs Released for EA Games on GOG! (December 20, 2012)

Space Marshal
If you've been waiting to track down the Sivar, put down a mutiny, and find your Steltek gun, your time has come! GOG has added the five missing expansion packs to their collection of Wing Commander games. The Secret Missions 1 & 2, for the original Wing Commander, Special Operations 1 & 2, for Wing Commander 2, and Righteous Fire, for Privateer are now available for download. Alien Crossfire has also been added to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. The games have also incorporated a handful of minor performance enhancements, such as smoother gameplay performance and resolved UAC conflicts. Wingnuts who already purchased the games can download the expansions free of charge.

For those who have been waiting for the expansions to pick up these games, now is a great time. GOG is in the middle of a holiday sale running through January 3rd. They have 475 titles on sale, including Wing Commander! You can pick up each game for only $2.99 a piece!

A while back, we started to sell EA games--great classics such as Wing Commander, Privateer, and Alpha Centauri. A few people--just a few!--noted that we didn't have the expansions and that made them sad panda.

Well, panda, be sad no more! As a holiday gift from us to you, we're bringing everyone who bought (or buys in the future!) the expansions for Wing Commander 1 + 2, Wing Commander Privateer, and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri for you today! These expansions are free updates, so just download the new installers for each game from your account and start playing now! Note that these EA games will not be part of any Daily Deal bundle, so go ahead and pick them up now for only $2.99 each.

Wing Commander 1 + 2--Wing Commander: The Secret Missions, Wing Commander: The Secret Missions 2 Crusade, Wing Commander II: Special Operations 1, Wing Commander II: Special Operations 2.
The Wing Commander expansions bring new missions, new ships, a new storyline, and an increase in difficulty in The Secret Missions, and in Secret Missions 2: Crusade, we see a whole new alien race, a new challenge, and a mysterious defection all raising the stakes of both the game's storytelling and its combat. In Wing Commander II: Special Operations 1 we see a layered web of deceit, lies, betrayal, and action all bringing that trademarked Wing Commander cinematic feel, while Special Operations 2 sees the player ambushed while escorting a traitor, and soon the player (as Col. Blair) will find himself undertaking one of his most dangerous missions of all: an undercover one infiltrating the very traitors he was escorting in the first place!

Wing Commander Privateer--Privateer Righteous Fire.
Finally, in Righteous Fire the player squares off against a crazy fundamentalist sect called the Retros as the open-ended space sim world's story continues with more action, ships, and missions to keep player occupied for hours.

A special thanks goes out to Paul Barnett and Jeff Skalski at Mythic (@MythicNews) for their help getting these add-ons secured (finally!) and available to you. :)

LOAF also had no small part in hounding everyone involved until this became a reality!

Wasn't American Revolt a standalone product? I seem to recall it as one of those not-quite-a-sequel things that look just like the original, but don't require the original.

Yeah sorry, I forgot there were other EA addons.

... I'm not sure you'll see them, it took me a year of pleading to make this happen...

Eh, no biggie. I'm sure it's a mess. Between rights ownership and access to the source if it's necessary (or even around anymore given the age of some of these titles), and other problems.

As a side note the first thing I did was to download a copy of Taewoong's latest build of dosbox, and replace a few lines in the configs to enable mt-32 emu. For others looking into this, keep in mind you need the MT-32 or CM-32L roms for it to work, specific versions as well. It's also of note that you should use the base config of the svn build. (with all the settings kindly provided by GOG) It eased my conscience acquiring the MT-32 roms as I have one hooked up in line with my SB64 on my dos pc. (running through a separate 401 of course) As an interesting side note, the ROM's contents were never copyrighted anyway. The SC-55's were though. Roland even admitted they couldn't find any records of a copyright. So feel free to download the MT-32 roms, it's legal, if morally grey.

That combined with xpadder and an onza te makes for quite fond memories.

This is a pretty newbie question, but I've just re-downloaded 1&2 and Privateer to get the updates, and I can't seem to find how to start Righteous Fire. I recall it being a separate program you had to launch, back when my old computer ran my CD copy of the game. That, and I uninstalled my old copies of GOG's Wing Commander 1&2 and Privateer, and selected the option of 'Keep old savegames' but it appears that they're gone :(

If you're in DOSBox, the file is RF.EXE; just type "RF" from the prompt while you're in the program's directory. Couldn't say how GOG has set up Righteous Fire's front end, though.

I'm curious. Is Privateer and RF the Floppy version or the CD version. As I recall the CD version has speech for RF. It's been a while though.

What an awesome early christmas gift, I know what I'll be doing this afternoon! (I'll start with RF I think). Thanks to everyone involved!

One side question considering "upgrades" on GOG: recently I visited GOG and it showed "upgraded" (or is it: "updated"?) on some of my bought games. I didn't know what it meant, so I ignored it. Now, according to this update, it means I should redownload the installer and install it again (will save files be lost?). Problem is, now my games library does not show anymore which games have been upgraded since I bought them...can I see that soemwhere? Or should I just re-download every one of them?

Thanks!

Currently, there seems to be no GOG desktop shortcut for Righteous Fire, and no RF.EXE file either. In this release, Righteous Fire can be launched by typing "priv r" in Dosbox. Alternatively, you could make a copy of the shortcut that the GOG installer creates on your desktop, and then edit its properties. Chcck the "target" line and replace "dosboxPRIV_single.conf" with "dosboxPRIV_RF.conf"

It seems to be the CD version - there's speech for both Privateer and Righteous Fire and there's a file called "prcd.exe" in the game folder.

Why all the trouble, when you can simply drag-copy the shortcut that is in the Start Menu to the Desktop ?

Because I forgot about the start menu. :)

Thanks for the tip! Apparently, the same is true for WC1 and WC2 - the add-ons don't show up on the desktop, but they do show up in the start menu.

Are the expansions the DOS versions or are they from the Kilrathi Saga edition?

You play them with DosBox, so I guess that would make them the DOS versions. However, I can't remember the differences between the KS add-ons and the DOS add-ons (if there were any - I remember winning Hell's Kitchen 1 was made possible in KS, but that was in the main WC1 game, not an add-on), so don't take my word for it.:p

Yep, I've gotten it to work now and moved my saved game over. It's great to be able to start RF with my pimped-out Centurion without having to start over!

Yeah, the GOG WCs are the DOS versions. The KS expansions were not directly compatible with the DOS versions of WC1/2 (and are freely available to download if you have the Windows KS versions of WC1/2 installed).
