Epees and talons:

What are your thoughts on the relation between the WC2 Epée and the Privateer Talon?

My theory: Confed ordered a bunch of epées, but later found them unsatisfactory as fighters in light of the development of the arrow, so it "cannibalized" the best parts of the epee (its fast engines, etc), and gave the the left-over frames old engines and such, making the former epees (now rechristened talons) a kind of militia patrol vessel. While the epee was bad at its job as a military-grade fighter, the talon turned out to be good at its job as a patrol vessel, because it was cheap to maintain. What started as an accidental use of spare parts turned out to be a cheap and popular patrol fighter design for militias across confed.

Mind you, I have no reason to think that besides unwarranted speculation, but damnit, it's a (sorta) free country, and I'll make a fool of myself if I wish!

They have different histories. The Talons in Privateer are said to have been sold to the Church of Man in 2654... while the Epee "replaced the Hornet just five years ago" (2660) in the WC1/2 Guide.

Well, I see absolutelly no connection at all between the two fighters... And, as LOAF mentioned, the Epee is actually a lot newer.

It is like saying that the Scimitar is a modified Excalibur.

Well with minor structural alterations, and the removal of everything that made the Excalibur not suck, I'm sure you'd have something pretty close to a Scim. Man did I hate the pig.

Why do you have to compare the Epee to the Talon anyways? The Talon was a flying coffin, the Epee had class and in the right hands could more than hold its own. I loved the Epee, I wish we'd have gotten a better taste of it in WC 2. A true shame to fly the Rapier twice and the Epee for like 5 missions.

Is start to learn to respect the Talon... Just as I am adding at least one more ship to my flying deathtrap list...
