End Run

The Tarawa is CVE-8 - the assignment for the painting was to do the Tarawa... but it ended up contradicting itself.

Reminds me of a little conversation a friend of mine told me:
"Captain, they are firing their guns!"
"Which ones?"
"The BIG ASS Guns!"

I think we only know for certain which ones were 4 (Sevastopol), 6 (Normandy), and 8 (Tarawa)... there's still a minimum of two numbers without names as well if they didn't skip any from 1 to 12, because IIRC we only know 10 CVE names.

Edit: fixed Sevastopol's number after checking my notes again :D

There's at least fifteen escort carriers made. In Fleet Action, the Kilrathi had said that seven of them were already destroyed, and about that time, the Confederation was about to launch eight CVEs to prowl and growl behind enemy territory. 7+8=15.

In terms of fighting capacity and uses, is there any difference between a CVE and say an escort carrier like the Victory?

An escort carrier has more offensive weaponry - the CVEs in the novels could hold their own against enemy destroyers in close range combat... the Ranger-class couldn't.

(It's hard to compare these specific classes because their designs are so far separated on the timeline... when the Ranger-class was produced, the CVE concept didn't exist. They're both similar solutions to the problem of expensive and difficult to build fleet carriers...)

I'm not sure why, but I always pictured escort carriers looking somewhat like transports... This is probably due to ones on TIE Fighter, or the mention that they were based on the design of a transport.

Delance: You're not too far off. The CVE concept is a shit and shake away from the converted transports from WWII. In fact, End Run states that the Tarawa was once a transport, I believe.

LOAF: I asked that because they seem to be a similar answer to the same problem: light patrol carriers that are quickly assembled and can get to and from the front lines/ patrols quickly.

A real life comparison of the Rangers to the modern WC3 carriers would roughly be today's US Navy. Let's assume that we got the big boys, the frontline monsters that are the Nimitz-class carriers. Now CVEs aside, let's take some very old carriers from 60 years ago.

In today's case, a good example would be those old WW2 Essex-class warships. Back in their heyday they were front-line carriers, and definately modern, but compared to the Nimitz-carriers of today, they are obsolete scrap heap. They don't got the hangar space to accomodate a lot of the larger aircraft (last time I checked, an F-14 Tomcat is way larger and heavier then a WW2 era Wildcat or Hellcat or Corsair). Their naval construction is kinda old and their hulls weren't designed to withstand the latest Russian anti-ship missiles complete with 2000 lb warheads (because they were built in WW2, anti-ship missiles didn't exist nor did Russia become a threat yet).

Since they displace roughly 33,000 tons compared to the Nimitz's 95,000 tons, they really can't be classified as heavy fleet carriers anymore. Chances are that if they were pressed into service once again, they would be designated as light or escort carriers. They wouldn't be fit for frontline duty, and certainly be given all the "shit jobs".

Now you can try to modernize the WW2 Essexs into the 21st century, and give it the latest weapons, and radar systems, and all of that, but that can only go so far. The hangar space still can't accommodate a lot of Hornets and Tomcats because the carrier was built to carry smaller WW2 fighters, not modern jet propelled aircraft 60 years into the future. The hull is still kinda weak, and a few modern missiles will deep six it in no time. It's an obsolete carrier, a second-string, the freshmen team compared to the varsity team. The bottom of the barrel.

The Nimitz carriers are the WC3 fleet/heavy carriers, the Essex's are the Rangers.

I don't think the analogy completely fits - because as far as we know, there was no time when the Ranger-class was the top dog carrier. In the pre-war WC era you still have older fleet and heavy carriers that outclass the Ranger...
