Introduction:
Good Morning Cadets. I'm Lieutenant Colonel Joshua "Sylvester" Dworkin. This guide has been published with the purpose of instructing your bright young minds on operation of the classic F-36G Hornet Light Fighter. This is the first fighter I flew and it always holds a good place in my memory.

Ships History:

In 2637, a mere eighteen months before the famed Enyo Engagement, Confederation Military Commanders realized a need for a new light escort and scout fighter to replace the aging and underpowered F-25 Demon. Main armemant requirements set down were two long range Laser Cannons, and mountings for three missiles with a top speed of 400 kps. Origin Aerospace and Douglas Aerospace both competed for contracts. In the end, the Origin team won the contract and began finalizing their designs of what came to be known as the Hornet.

After testing, the F-36A entered service with three carrier groups four months before the Enyo Engagement. Pilot reaction was favorable, and more were shipped to all operating carriers. When the Enyo Engagement took place, Hornets were elements of the escort wings that allowed heavier fighters like the contemporary A/K-14 Raptor to engage and destroy orbiting Kilrathi Gunships. A trainer version, the F-36B and a Wild Weasel, the F-36C also entered service at this time.

Throughout the 40's the ship served well against its Kilrathi equivalents. It was well liked by pilots who commented that the fighter provided the perfect balance between speed and armament in its class which made it an effective scout. In the light escort role, the standard missile armament (2 DF, 1HS) was replaced with three heat seakers in order to adequetely defend larger fighters. In 2647, the F-36D was introduced with a larger engine which increased top speed to 420 kps. The trainer version was also upgraded as the F-36E.

In 2649, elements of the Killer Bee's, a Hornet squadron from the famed TCS Tiger's Claw sucessfully fought off an opposing Kilrathi force that attacked the carrier and retreating Confederation Transports in a action later known as Custer's Carnival. This action permantly burned the Hornet in everybody's memory and elevated the craft to legendary status.

By the time of the ships 15th birthday in 2654, it was still the premire light fighter but its light armor was showing its age against newer Kilrathi fighters. But the ship still remained in frontline service through the F-36F and F-36G models introduced in 2656 and 2658 respectively. In 2660, mainline units began replacement of the Hornet with the F-54 Epee and F-71 Stilleto.

Serving in home defense squadrons during the 60's, the ships were called back to active service for the Battle of Earth in 2668. Most of the venerable fighters were destroyed in Earth's defense, but they served well nonetheless. After the conclusion of the battle, the remaining units returned to Home Defense in 2669.

Tactics:

Offenive: Never attack an enemy head on with this fighter. Its limited armor can only withstand a few hits before damage occurs. Instead use your speed and manuvrability to get on your enemy's tail where you can use your Heat Seaker. Even though your lasers aren't powerful, the large capacitor means that you can almost certainly destroy any enemy as long as you remain on his tail. Perform quick 'hit and runs' on heavier ships to wither their defenses.

Defensive: Always keep moving, use loops and rolls to avoid incoming fire. The Hornet's greatest asset is its manuvrability so use it to gain the upper hand if you are attacked. The ship is not that well armored, so avoid getting shot as best as you can.

Conclusion:

This guide should be very effective with operating the Hornet, use it well and good hunting. Look for the next publication soon.
