Devil may cry 2

I was wondering if anyone out there has played Devil May Cry 2
and has any tips on how to build up Dante's skills so that he is most effective any help is appreciated

I heard that DMC2 was a big departure from the original and a big disappointment. DMC was pretty badass too.
