Demon Or Centurion ?

Hi,

The Demon seems to be more maneuverable and a little faster with afterburner than the Centurion (though not by much) ... also many here in the forum posted that they're using a Demon ...

Now I wonder what the main advantages of the Centurion are ?
Shouldn't it be considerably better than a Demon (just compare the price: 125k
vs 200k) ? Or is it ;) ???

Greetings,

If your going to get a Demon you might want to get the $185k one, its a milspec type (military specs) and seems to have alot of stuff on it you wont have to buy, like afterburners. The Demon can hold 10 torps or 5 IFF, IR missles in one rack and *one* heatseeker/fire and foget in to other. :(

The Cent can handle 10 missles of any type in each launcher: 20.

The Demon can handle lvl 3 reactor/lvl 2 shield max.

I don't remember what the Cent can handle, but I think it is the same.

Personely, I think the Demon is really cool looking, a bit cooler looking that the Cent. Basicly, I think they are about the same....but I am willing to be corrected so that I know too....

Have fun,

The Cent can hold more missles and more cargo (Cent. = 50+25, Demon max 25)
But the demon is cheaper and faster.

You have to chouse between firepower or maneuverability

According to my data:

The Centurion has:
heavier armor & Shields
quicker acceleration
larger cargo hold
4 Weapon mounts, 2 Missile Racks, and an optional rear turret.

The Demon's main advantage is a slightly higher speed
it too mounts 4 weapons, but just 1 missile rack, and no rear turret.

IMHO, the Demon looks more like the ships that were in Privateer 2.
From a cockpit viewpoint, the Centurion would have a wider field of view than the Demon, which would make it a better "real-world" choice for a fighter.

But, then again, like automobiles, "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder."
As a fan of the original, I've always loved the sleek mean look of the Centurion.

Dude, you're getting a Demon(tm)!

Realistically, the Centurion's two main advantages are:
A) Ability to hold 4 weapons, up to Heavy, plus two full missile racks and a turret.
B) A single-level higher shield.

The Demon's advantages over the Centurion are:
A) Higher top/slide speed. It's possible to outrun nearly everybody, and keep shields up while shooting down incoming missiles, with that extra 200kph.
B) Better turning rate lets you turn and burn other fighters, and 4 guns with autotargetting makes getting kills easy.
C) You can buy a Drayman with all the money you get from surviving 17-Talon furballs via A) and B), and then use your decked-out Demon as an escort fighter.

I've so far only used the prerelease, but I found the Demon's speed and maneuverability to outweigh the Cent's heavier guns. My first couple of missions in the totally topped-up Cent I bought with those furball missions' earnings saw me cut down in seconds; it could be the Cent, or it could be my flying style. Either way, I didn't see any reason *not* to switch back to the Demon.

Give me a Demon with Torpedoes, 4 Meson cannons, and auto-tracking guns anyday!

Please Excuse the dumb question, but where do I buy a Demon? I seem to remember being able to get one at Perry in earlier versions, but in 1.0 Perry doesn't have any ships for sale.

Probably depends on mission or guild affiliation.

I seem to recall some kind soul pointing out that the Demon can only be bought after some mission, or perhaps only once you join the Mercenary's Guild. On second thought, it must be the latter: you can get the *Talon* after you complete a pirate mission in the main game path. The two ships show up under Ships->Hunter->Light and Medium, respectively, for Talon and Demon.

Joining the Mercanary's Guild did the trick, thanks.

i personally like the demon more...

cause the maneuverability lets you never get hit :)

and you still have 4x guns for firepower.

I agree with sleet.

I went from Tarsus to Galaxy (I'm a fan of trading) and got it fully upgraded before I got tired of lugging around Plutonium and the like.

Then I went for the Demon and have been playing with it ever since. I absolutely love it. Only thing it's missing is a turret, but when you're going that fast and pulling those turns...well, the turret wouldn't get much use anyway.

I recently decided to purchase a centurion and deck it out with full upgrades (took over a million credits...geez). To my surprise, I found myself not liking what I found (I played the original and the centurion seemed kickass back then).

Thing is, with the Demon, I can support 4 plasma guns with ease. A lot of people here are running smaller end guns so that they can fire them more often, but to be honest, even with 4 plasma guns on my Demon I don't run into too many problems.

From memory, if the afterburner is off, I can fire off two full volleys (of 4 guns each) until the energy bank drops to 1/5 or something. After that, there is some combination of guns that fire when the energy is available. The maxed reactor level generates 9000 KJ, and you figure each gun takes 1,700 KJ/shot...even adjusting for power needed to shields you still are able to fire off about 2-3 shots/second.

If the volley of plasma fire makes a direct hit on the enemy, odds are his ship is out of commission. Talons blow easy, and I've even taken out a Dralthi with a single volley (usually doesn't happen...but if you hit it just right you can do it). My style of fighting is head-to-head passes, so you figure that if it's a single ship you've got two individual chances to blast it out of the sky right then and there, no second pass. That's typically been good enough for me. But in the rare case where you miss him twice while he's coming at your face, even a single impact of plasma will deal 38 MJ of damage - about 3 times as much as your average "other" gun. The only weakness of fighting with plasma guns is that you lose out on those dizzying circular chases, but all you need to do in that case is to hit the afterburners and put some distance between you and the crazy pilot, and come around for another pass where you can use your guns to maximum effect.

The Centurion can't really support heavy guns...the energy consumption becomes a problem. Also, the Demon can run the afterburners indefinitely, whereas the Centurion will slowly lose energy.

Finally, one of my favorite things about the Demon is the positioning of its guns. It's conducive towards accurate aiming. The Centurion gives you greater spread, which is a little bit more forgiving if your aim is off in the lateral direction. However, if you are fighting a small ship you can't really count on scoring 3 or more hits (kilrathi fighters are a notable exception...here the spread is often blessing because they are thin and long). The Demon has all of its guns positioned in the center, which means that you if you score a hit, it's likely that you've scored all 4 of them. Also works much, much better with autotracking - you have to aim within the red box for the autotracking feature to be of any use (it works on unselected targets as well, but you need to get the fire somewhat close to the bearing of the vessel...it's not a FF missile). With a centurion...doesn't really work out too well (too much spread!).

One last thing about missiles...personally I tend not to use them very much (I don't know why). I use torpedos more than I do missiles (although for some reason I put a tractor beam on my Demon, so I'm not using either right now). But even then, 5-10 missiles should get you through any major fight (assuming you don't launch them willy-nilly). And there's really no advantage to having more missiles than you could reasonably use in a single fight (again, I don't use them at all at this point).

So personally, I'm sticking to my Demon. It can outrun anything that doesn't have fur. Might try a catship sometime in the future, but those only come milspec and are incredibly expensive.

Ignoring for the moment the question of whether the Demon should even be available (addressed elsewhere) it is horribly unbalanced right now. Though cheaper than the Centurion, it is superior in many ways. Lower max shield is offset by the maneuverability and small size, and allows it to pump out more shots with the equal number of guns. The Centurion has more missiles and a rear turret, but it hardly matters.

IF the demon were to stay, shields and reactor would be dropped a level each (to better match its size) and it would likely be limited to medium guns. Then its cheaper price would make sense. Anyone who feels like coming in and yelling that it should just be removed, read up on the subjunctive form.

Buy a smaller shield (then it's exactly the same as the demon) or simply cut your level 3 shields to 2/3ds output.

What I did on the patch was:

(1) Demon only has slots for 2 light+medium guns and 2 light guns so NO TACHYONS, for one -- I personally fly a Demon with either 4 lasers or 2 lasers 2 neutrons.

(2) max shield level = 2

My fav setup however is a Drayman with tachyon turrets, plus a Demon I go and do the fighting with. The Drayman is used as somewhere to hide behind as it has tough shields and good turrets, that gives my shields time to reform, so I'm good to go again. Or, dock on your capship, repair, and get back to work.

me i love the demon. (epseccialy for my stratagey) my plan is to speed about 10,000 kilometers away from the enemy, then fire with my 4 neutron guns to lower the shields and then launch a proton or two as a finisher. my demon has a level 3 sheild, afterburner, mult thrust enhancer, mult turn jet enhacer, advanced hunter radar, a full stock of proton missels,4 neutron guns, tungstun armor and hull, adavanced repair droid, jump drive, full system maps, level 3 reactor just about the best it ca have. it took on a bounty of a drathi starship with 19 yes i said 19 ships for protection and i didn't even have to hire wingmen.(couse i had to land to restock and heal bout 5 times but still i got like 200,000 credits for that. a centurion is for if you wanna launch lots of missles, use turrets but still not get hit demons are for firepower.my other ship is the galaxy.2 neutron turrets,2 neutron guns, 20 freind or foe missles, good radar. same as my demon just about it is a kick but machine along with my demon it leaves enemys x_x

the military ships are hard to upgrade(or downgrade) because they are only compatible with ceratain stuff. trust me customize your own dont get a military spec. it may cost a little more but it is worth it.

Greetings Bigbad Bubba,

Welcome...;>....

I have a question, as I understand it, if you have the same shield as reactor ie 3/3 for example, the recharge of everything slows down because the shield draws too much power. Is this happening to you or are you dropping your shield down a level to compensate?

Also, how did you get a lvl 3 shield on your demon? I have a demon also and it won't let me put more than 3/2 reactor/shield on mine...but then I bought a milspec, that might have something to do with it.

Hmmm....I have almost 2mil....mebey I might try doing the cheaper one....

Just curious....and again welcome!

Have fun!

how do you get your demon docked on your drayman and then fly it around while the drayman is in space? I've got a fully decked out Paradigm that I want to base myself out of, but it just sits at Perry because I need to use my demon for missions, and can't figure out how to use both of them at the same time.

ok, I can't seem to get my ships back to the Paradigm once I've launched them, I can never get close enough to tractor them in because their pilots keep flying away and the damn paradigm couldn't outrun molasses in january, how do you get the pilots to stop flying away?

(1) Tell them to form on your wing (ctrfl f)
(2) If you're using WCU, the Paradigm should have autotracking on its capship tractor
(3) Distance is approx. 4000 meters. Make sure your tract beam is extended to that THEN try to tractor them in.
