Defiance's Eyecandy Thread

Pick your targets pilots, we caught 'em napping!

Pirates thought a food shipment out of Nephele would be easy pickings. Unfortunately for them, the militia caught wind of what they were planning and what should have been easy pickings turned into a quick and ugly furball when fighters from BWS Reliant came in over the pole and caught the pirates unaware...

This looks so stunning that this could've been used as promo art for "The Price of Freedom".
Well, the stuff made by people online in 3D easily blows out of'the water he AAA productions of the Nineties, no doubt about it. Take a look at Babylon 5, for example. ^_^;

Hmm. It's certainly very pretty overall, but I must say I'm not loving the explosion. It looks somewhat... boring. Like an amorphous cloud of orangey yellow. Explosions are very hard to do well, so I think it would be good for you to go back to WCP and have a look at some of the explosions they have there.

I'm working on something that probably needs no further introduction than: "Die by the very weapons you adore!"...
How did I MISS THIS?

Respect! to the Talon... flamed debris. Every Retromaniac who respects himself should have a collection of these somewhere in the junk yard.
Nice work Defiance. You make it look good assembled and we'll make it look good disassembled.

Quick update on the Lexington for @Pedro's WC4 remaster. Finished out most of the modeling this weekend. Got the hangar complete, still needs a few minor tweaks, and I'll probably do something with some piping along the ceiling. The exterior is mostly done except for the plating and modeling the intakes and engines.

In other news. I also got the Talon painted with a base Retro coat of paint. It needs some spit and polish, (ie more weathering) but the core texture is something I'm happy with.

I'd actually taken a bit of a break as I'd been burning the candle at both ends for a bit too long - now I shall have to dive back in to justify your hard work.

That has to be the most detailed mesh of the Concordia/Yorktown since the one Scooby built for WCSaga.
(However, I have the feeling that the hangar feels a bit small in scale. But perhabs it's just me.)

It does feel a bit small indeed. The Hellcat should be twice smaller compared to the hangar bay, if you consider this shot.

Not that it is that much of an issue, though.

funny you should mention scale. Evidently Concordias are like a Tardis, since their hangars are larger inside than out. The Hellcats are scaled correctly to an 800 meter ship and the orange icon is representative of a 1.8 meter person. I based the hangar off the in game model as opposed to the stills which were used for detail. Really scale is a problem all over the model. The window bays as scaled are about 2.3 meters tall so they're larger than an average person even though the bar window is clearly smaller. Based on those dimensions it's nigh impossible to fit 94 fighters in that hull without a pocket dimension somewhere. :D

still I'll check scaling on the doors etc.

Good point.
Scaling has always been a problem in Science Fiction in one way or the other, including Wing Commander (the Behemoth, the Hvar'Kann,...) and Star Trek (the Klingon Bird of Prey, the JJPrise, DS9 and the Defiant,...).

Also, great work on the Talon. Have you though about where you wish to use it?

Thanks! The Talon was a special request by the Flat Universe team, so it's destined to go there along with my Banshee 2.0.

Also - that image from WC4, if you look at the in-game model in the viewer, the image is backwards. The shot is clearly angled toward the bow but the Hellcat but the Hellcat is spotted pointing aft? So the question becomes: is the hangar correct in the image or the game model? My thoughts are that the model is more correct since it was captured off the original high-poly model so the four revetments are at the bow, not the stern.

Fun bit of trivia - in UE, when we show the interior of the Princeton during one of the endgame cutscenes, we actually had an upscaled model of the carrier just for that occasion. I wanted lines and lines of fighters, to highlight the fact that this is a fleet carrier rather than some escort piece of junk, and I did want the carrier to appear as big as it often felt in WC4 outside of the cockpit.

At the end of the day, I think with WC carriers, you can do one of two things - either you downscale any WC1, WC3, and WC4 fighters you have, or you upscale the carrier. Indeed, the games certainly do this as well. Stats are one thing, gameplay is another.

By the way, you should definitely have more of those hangar-like storage spaces along the sides of the flight deck. Right now, you've only got a couple of them, and only on one side of the deck. Another thing you should do is add a whole bunch of junk and doodads to the deck, the kind of stuff that can be seen in that WC4 shot above, and in the cutscenes from the game. You know, boxes, barrels, towing vehicles, ordnance, all that kind of stuff. Otherwise, you run the risk that at the end of the day, the hangar deck will still feel low-detail.

Also, didn't I say I'd be staying off the CZ for a few months? Bugger. I gotta break this habit :p.
