Cool Intrepid Gallery For All (May 31, 2008)

AD went through a lot of effort to capture some great shots of the BWS Intrepid for Major A Payne's Durango recently, and they're too neat to not share. The images reveal some great details on the weapons, propulsion system, hull and flight deck. Damage is also particularly visible and accented by lit and unlit windows throughout. AD used the WC4 DVD[/url] as a source for these.

These are beautiful! Thanks for posting them.

The fifth one down--the one that shows Banshees emerging from the hangar bar--got me wondering about something. These Banshees look relatively large compared to the Durango--so large, that I have a hard time imagining more than about eight or nine of them (like, four on each side) fitting into the Intrepid's hangars. And Banshees (23.5 m/18 tons according to the CIC database) are comparably sized to the Vindicator (20 m/16 tons) and considerably smaller than Hellcats (27 m/14 tons), Avengers (33 m/21 tons), Bearcats (27 m/14 tons), or the collossal Lances (i.e. "Dragons") (40 m/26 tons).

Do we know what the Intrepid's fighter complement was? I have a hard time imagining it is more than about a dozen or so, based on this picture... All the CIC database says is "Light", but that seems to mean anywhere from ~20 to ~50 fighters in most places. And in the course of the game, I know I burned through quite a few fighters (of course, the game doesn't enforce limited ships as Standoff does). Granted, they may have had hangar space off to the sides, above, or below, and may have stored some of their ships disassembled (I think somewhere it is noted that most BW designs are modular, to make swapping damaged parts out for undamaged ones easier to keep the most of their few fighters flying as possible).

Also, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Durango was actually a destroyer design, without substantial fighter capabilities, not a light carrier, and that the UBW had modified the Intrepid so be a carrier, in violation of some agreement with Confed. Is this in the canon somewhere, or was it some fan fic that I saw at some point? If it is a modified destroyer, it would explain its very small fighter complement.

I'm not sure without looking what any of the ship's fighter complements are but I can add that often there's an elevator with extra fighter storage on another deck,

Here's one more with a Banshee. I think part of it might be the angle. Looking top-down, I can picture more than four fitting on a side. Also from different angles, you can see how there could be an entire deck underneath just for storage of additional fighters.
