Compatibility issues...

Hey, I just recently nabbed me a copy of the Kilrathi Saga. Joy. My WC games haven't worked since the old DOS days! :)

I was wondering if my archaic and dust-blanketed copies of the secret missions and spec ops would work with the newer games though? I don't think they do, since the re-releases of the original trilogy were built for Windows and the old-skool floppy disks are DOS-based. Am I correct? If they would work, though, that'd be cool! Otherwise I'm gonna have to try and clear up space and sell these off, and I hate having to sell my old games.

No, those addons don't work. You can grab the Kilrathi Saga addons as free downloads (available in the CIC File Section )

Speed up? I thought old games go fast enough as it is on new computers. I assume you mean slowdown, in which case you could try using Moslo - more here.

Is there any (legal) way to make those KS add-ons work with the original WC1 game? The only PC WC game I haven´t played is Secret Missions 2. :(

copy moslo.exe to your wc2 folder/directory and then type:

moslo /x wc2.exe

Where ´x´ is the percentage of speed your computer will have. For instance if you set it to /20, your computer will run at 20% of its speed. There is a different setting for each computer, you just have to keep trying until you find the right speed.

Before you use Moslo, you should disable the cache memory in your BIOS, that will help cutting a lot of your computer´s speed.

I believe Quarto pulled something off, but I don't think it was incredibly pretty... Overall it's probably easier to get a WC1 CD that has the addons on it already.

I had indeed, and indeed it wasn't pretty, at least not for SM1/2 :p.
SM1 is utterly impossible (unless you had KSaga installed... but that would defeat the purpose of the whole thing). SM2 can be made to work, but only in such a limited degree that it becomes useless - the game crashes when you encounter any ships absent from WC1, or when you fly the Dralthi. In both cases, you could probably edit the missions in order to get it to work, but that would simply cripple the campaign. So, TC's advice is definitely the best solution.

But WC2 plays at a perfectly normal rate...

BTW, SM1/2KS was never meant to be used with WC1DOS in the first place, certainly not 'legally'. ;)

Shh, it was done in the name of science. Or something ;).

Eh, if it worked it would probably be legitimate...

Aw, heck, everything is done in the name of 'science'. :) I was just pointing that out because TC appeared to say what you were trying was legitimate:

Umm... I'm not quite sure where the legal problem comes from. You're using origin supplied software in conjunction with origin supplied games. I'd have to check the licensing agreements for the KS addons, but I don't really see an issue.

Well, I thought there was (there usually is ;)), but I just had a look and all I found was:

INSTALL.DOC
Before installing Secret Missions 1 and 2 make sure that The Kilrathi
Saga version of Wing Commander 1 is installed. Secret Missions 1 and
2 will not work with the DOS version of this game, and won't install
until you have the Windows 95 version of Wing Commander 1 installed.
