Could it have been the radar. I remember that somewhat limited field of view could be balanced by a good radar setup in a game. Besides, an actual fighter plane/spacecraft would have a large field of view or there would not be many models of that type for very long.
I think it also been that ugly side views and the blind rear view that complicated everything. Also the palette of the game - ALL GRAY - that faded everything onto an unique color. I remember in the first WC games that the palette helped to find enemies on the screen with the different contrast of the kilrathi brown ships, confed green ships and blue sky.
