Celestia

A friend of mine brought to my attention this really neat piece of software. It's a catalog of celestial objects in real time 3-D. It's totally open source too, which means it's free to download. I just spent over an hour hopping from moons to planets and stars. Here's the web address:

http://www.shatters.net/celestia/

Probably a few have already seen it, but for any astronomy buff out there, it's worth a look.

Hey, thanks for the link! I've been enjoying this program a whole lot! I especially like how you can filter through the stars to see which ones have planets.

Very fun program, I wonder if they'll ever add things like nebulas and the like.

[edit]Found it, there are a bunch of add-ons (including nebulae) here: http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/

Ya, I've been having a pretty good time with it too. Not only does Motherlode have real celestial object to add on, but you can add Sci Fi stuff like Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. I just installed the Defiant. Take that Dominion!

Criticalmass, I was interested in that link, but I get an error when I try to access it.

That's strange, it works when I try it from the forum. Let's do something else - go to the Elite Webring (http://w.webring.com/hub?ring=ter21) and scroll down the list - Mostly Harmlass is pretty much on the bottom. Try to access it from there (or have fun with the other projects) [shameless plug]...

Well, the links semm to work now, both ways. This is really good stuff. Given the nature of the Celestia engine, the possibilities are nearly endless. The thought of applying this program to Wing Commander or a Privateer-style game...
