Cap Ship Construction vs. Cap Ship Destruction

Metras

Spaceman
There has always been one thing annoying me in the craw...
If you're aware of the WC series and cap ships, you'll recognize that many of them are destroyed *snaps fingers* like that!

But... it takes years just to make a destroyer or cruiser; and Confed loses them like hot-cakes.

...I don't know about you, but someone who has been designing these ships, should make them last longer...

Metras: They aren't lost that quickly... Most carriers and the like we see have been in service a couple of years... And it's not like the designers' designs sucked, it's that our designs for fighters and torpedoes got better. The Kilrathi Super-Carriers (from False Colors) were able to take multiple torpedo hits, and still have lots of functionality.

------------------
Maestro: "Lighten up Spyder! We're not gonna die! We're gonna WIN!!"

Zero: "Hey, Maestro... Uhh... If you DIE, can we pick through your stuff before we head back to Sol?"

Maestro: "You can burn in Hell."

Ahh... but that brings my point.
Fighter/Bomber weaponry design supercedes that of the common cap ship.
The only reason those cap ships last for a few years, is that they haven't done anything but above the minor skirmish.

Exerpt from Wing Commander: Privateer
"Our entire fleet jumped into the Kilrathi System... and bam! The Entire Fleet got destroyed like that! They didn't even have enough time to send out a distress signal!"

There are other examples, but I would never think of spamming the post...

You cant make something to last, its an obvious fact in the WC universe. No matter how tough you make something, it can always be destroyed. Look at the Concordia or the Behemoth (Even though the Behemoth had flawed areas).

"I'm putting you back in the cockpit Colonel, where you will be reunited with an old friend, the thrill of battle!"

If capships were as hard to destroy as they should be, we would probably never be able to win the game.

Like our friend said from the previous reply, even the Behemoth had major flaws in it (like not being able to hit the braod-side of a barnyard).
Perhaps they are so easy to destroy because it is the crew who stink so badly; and they just don't use their weapons effectively.

Hey heck! Your own wingmen fly straight into you!

The best crews in the fleet stink? No, it's a matter of what weapons they make into the game and how winnable they want to make it for the player.

Hey Guys, Remember Midway '42. Bombers vs. Cap Ships and no major Cap Ship engagement. Simply put, with just enough ordnance you win or lose the big ones when you do not have ample fighter cover. To me WC is a remake of a familiar scenario in a futuristic setting. At least in WC3, you could blow away Cap Ships with your guns (a frustrating exercise in WC2)... I wonder why they did not put the Broadsword in WC3. It would have been fun to fly-by a capship and pummel it with the side guns.

i think cap to cap battle is the coolest!

i remmeber this mission the Ajax when up against e destroyer while I was cleaning up fighters around the battle, VERY cool from a distance, same thing happend on the next Navpiont, the TCS Coventry was up against a cruiser. very cool mission

Metras, Capships like destroyers, cruisers, or frigated don't take years to build. Many of them can be build over one year, and much less are lost. Carriers wich are much harder to destroy also take longer to build.

Twister, the destroyer won with a cat cruiser? You weren't playing on rookie again were you?

I kinda liked the torpedo only limitation in WC2, it added a challange to some of the missions. The one that sticks in my mind is the last one in Specials Ops 1 where you face two Ralatha. There was a similar mission towards the end of SO2 only you were in a Morningstar with a mace and couple Torps again against two Ralatha escorted by some Mandarin Sabres.

That was one weakness of WC1. Once you knocked out the fuighter around a cruiser or detroyer, you could easily kill it a just a few passes. I like the Prophecy approach where you have a lot of turrets that can do considerale damage but it is possible to take them out.

Same here, it took much more skill to take out a capship. Though I really like how you take out the capships in Prophecy/SO.

Everyone I know has problems with that mission.

It's the hardest bombing mission I flew in WC.

Ah, but that mission was much easier. You could take out both Ralathas with that Mace if you got lucky, and if not you can take out one easily, and than use your torps on the second one.

Not if you're flying the Hornet.

Ay, that's true. Being able to target turrets, and having much more of them (including the missile turrets) is a great addition to the series.

That SO2 mission gave me trouble a couple times. One, Manaic is your wingman. Two, I fired the Mace too early or something odd happened and it detonated before close to one of the ships, but not close enough to take it out. It didn't damage the other one at all so I didn't have enough ordinance to take them both out. I've never been lucky enough to get both of them with one Mace, though I've been able to damage both of them with one mace and then need to use only one torp on each to finish them off. Once, maybe, I destroyed on and damaged the other with a Mace.

I just replayed WC3 not too long ago - in under a day! Anyway, it was Destroyer vs Destroyer and Cruiser vs Cruiser. TCS Coventry just barely beat the kat cruiser.

Wow.. if the Coventry really beat the Cat Cruiser... then the cats were twiddling with their paws all day.

When I replay that, the Cat Cruiser always wins.
That is really weird...
