Bossman

Geez, that guy's gonna get me killed

! I've started playing WC again (a thing I should have done a long time ago, but for some reason didn't...), and man oh man, people on the Claw say that Knight is a bad pilot, but they should mean the Bossman: He doesn't listen to orders, always crushs into me, don't know how to fly in formation...

Now I understand why he died in the movie

Wow! Let`s not get carried away here. I`ve been playing WC1 myself in the past few days, and my Bossman`s doing just fine. As long as you don`t try to go in on his target, you should be fine. After all a guy has to live up to his reputation, doesn`t he?

When I play WC1 Iceman really lives up to his name: he gets iced. Always. The greatest pilot in Confed in a raptor gets wasted in 1 pass by a Salthi...

The time is near.
There are still quite a few days remaining.

Well, there's that first mission in the rapirs squadren (...I'm playing the game and don't pay attention for the deatils, IIRc it's the Black lions???). All I want to do is take out 14 ships, however, the Bossman doesn't think so: He just fly into those 6 Dralthi and destroy one of 'em as he crush into it, getting his fighter to critical damage (all in the red). Yet he still doesn't obey me and doesn't return to the Claw. Fine, I can live with that. But then, at the last nav, I need to watch over him from the Jalathis, and he just crushs into me, taking my front armor and some sub-sys with him, while the cats rip me with lasers and missiles

Hmm, curious. I found that Bossman was actually one of the best wingman... he got a lot of kills (well, one or two
wink.gif
). And the only order that he (and everyone else) doesn't obey is the "return to base" order.

turning to maneuver will sometimes put you on a collision course if you don't know where you're going. In my case, I have to tryto crash into them, otherwise it doesn't happen. There was the exception where I was flying a Raptor with Knight and just as the Drayman jumped out, it hit Knight who flew just ahead of it the instant before jump and the Drayman sent him spinning right into my tail.

That's it! I've finally got what I wanted, but both I and Bossman were heavily damaged. Foolishly, I decided to fly around the Claw before I land, and Bossman crushed himself during one of the passes and got himself killed!

Now I have to do it all over again

Ah, just forget about it, I'll stop complaining 'bout him and just be the *bigger man*
wink.gif

Besides, I don't think I'll be a better wingman then him if he was the wing commander (or anyone else for that matter).

Not everybody disobeys the "return to base" order, only the big shots: Iceman, Bossman, Hunter, and Maniac. Knight will always obey that order, as well as Spirit and Angel, if I`m not mistaken. Paladin has his moods.

A pass around the 'Claw?
smile.gif
That was indeed foolish.

Mad Hatter: Oh yeah, that's right. Hmm, I always liked flying with Knight. He's not supposed to be very good, but he got a hell of a lot more kills than the hotshots did

Aye, Knight is my fav wingman. Always obey me, keeps the cats off my back, doesn't get kimself killed (well, most of the time anyway
wink.gif
).

And what's so bad about flying around the 'Claw? I do it almost every mission, just love looking at it
smile.gif
Sure, it wasn't smart flying in my condition (or Bossman's), but doing a fly-by here and there is harmless.

Well, that victory lap just won you another replay of the mission.

Which reminds me that I was escorting a destroyer to the Claw the other day, and for some reason it was blocking the Claw`s entrence to the landing pad, so I tryed to maneuver between them in order to land, and while I managed, Bossman, my wingman, crashed into the freakin` ship.

Looks like I'm gonna get stuck with Bossman for a bit longer then I've expected, for now I face the Ralari mission
smile.gif
.

I remember the first time I've finished it, my brother was so pissed off and told me that he rather not finish the mission, because he "get's more kills that way".

But that was a long time ago, and my bro was able to finish the miss, and soon enough I will finish it again (and I'm still #1 in my house!)

hehehe...
I remember an excerpt from Origin (now that you mention it) when WC1 came out. "...Wing Commander's Advanced AI System..."
lol... The programmers at Origin designed the program well. As for your wingmen crashing into you; be careful with your maneuvers. Your Wingmen have the tendancy of 'not watching you', and end up in the infirmary ten minutes later. You maneuver into them, they will not evade.

Annoying, isn't it?

Hunter is supposed to be this big coolguy hotshot cat killer, but he sucks. I think he is suicidal or something because if he isnt flying head on into a Jalthi he's getting in the way of my missles meant for the cats.

You`re wrong, he`s pretty good, HECK! he got 4 kills in one of my last missions.

...or maybe I was just bein` sloppy that one time, heh.
smile.gif

I`ve noticed another good thing about him: If he`s severely damaged he`ll return on his own to the claw, and not fight till his bitter end. That`s more AI than most pilots in the game. It also let`s me finish up all the other ships without having to baby-sit him.

Y'know... your Wingmen are suppose to be supporting you... not hindering you.
Hehe... I guess Origin thought it would be more of a challenge to have chimps fly wingmen.

I always have problems with Paladin in WC1 but Spirit is the best one for me.

Paladin? It's not possible to have trouble with Paladin
smile.gif
. One of the best wingmen around.

The AI was advanced at the time.

I don't complain about the AI, at least not cat-AI: Sure, once you're on a tail of a cat, it's not that hard taking him out, but hey, the cats try to escape! They don't fight to death like in most of the other games
