Are You Mutant Enough? (May 9, 2011)

Joe recently found some cool print advertisements from WarTourist. There's a handful of Origin ads from the late '80s to mid '90s. The WC4 promo highlights some of the gushing critical acclaim that the game received. There are also scans of Origin's other science fiction franchise, Space Rogue, as well as Chris Roberts' first Origin game, Bad Blood. Check out WarTourist's Photostream for more.

"Ths truly is the vanguard of the next generation of electronic entertainment." 4 1/2 out of 5 stars - Computer Gaming World

"Origin's latest science fiction spectacular is even more impressive than its predecessor." 90% - PC Gamer

"A movie game that takes CD-ROM warfare into the next generation." - Entertainment Weekly

I noticed that at the Computer Gaming World Museum there are some good ads in Issue 112 from November 1993.

An ad for Wing Commander Academy is on page 79 ("Relentless Space Combat - For Naive Rookies or Hardened Vets") and an ad for Privateer is on page 228 ("Privateer - Where Deals Are Made With A Handshake And Broken By A Volley From A Meson Cannon.").

Sorry, but I'm not sure how to extract them from the PDF . . .

Here you go.

The Wing Commander Academy promo screenshots are interesting (I know we have them online somewhere)--especially the wingman selection: Rusty, Dingo, Gauntlet and Harridan. I wonder what happened there!

Heh, that reminds me--remember the early Wing Commander IV ads with Blair and Tolwyn back to back, with a mysterious shadow figure between them? We'd speculate endlessly about who it was who was really behind the story... and then the reveal was that it wasn't anyone we'd ever heard of (Seether) and also he wasn't really pulling the strings?

There was a standee of that image at my local FYE. It was pretty enormous though so there was no way I could run off with it through the store, out the mall and to my tiny Honda Escort. And I never thought to *ask* for it.

Space Rogue looks exactly like EVERY video game ad from a 1990s comic book that I desperately wanted to play.

I have a Blair standee at home still. And a little desktop one.

I think Joe Garrity has all the photos from the Space Rogue cover shoot. Lots of pictures of the hunky Space Rogue posing. And he owns the painting!

I always loved the Space Rogue Cover. Who wouldn't want to be a Space Dude with Leather Clothes and Scarf? I mean, it does get cold in space .

Ah, those were the days. Never herad of Space Rogue or Bad Blood.

They're both "Before Wing Commander" in the Origin story. I'm not surprised that you wouldn't know Space Rogue... but Bad Blood was Chris Roberts' game immediately before Wing Commander!

I didn't know OGRE. As a keen follower of giant tank video games, this deeply ashames me.
