Aegis Cruises to XBLA (May 17, 2007)

Long Live the Confederation!
Microsoft yesterday released "Aegis Wing", a free side-scrolling space shoot-em-up game for Xbox Live Arcade. The game was developed by a trio of interns over a semester and is being released as a free gift for XBLA fans! We gave it a few test flights last night. Although the general idea is similar to Wing Commander Arena, the game itself is several orders of magnitude less complex -- it's essentially a classic sidescroller with updated (though still simplistic) graphics. It does, however, feature four player co-op play... which could be a good way to start training wingman teams for Arena's elaborate co-op battles! Head on over to your Marketplace panel and grab your free game. Well, it does have one thing in common with Wing Commander; MTV [ed: really?] says:
Naming the game is fun, and the interns handled that. First they wanted to call the game "Wingmen," but the Microsoft people involved in clearing titles said they couldn't. "Aegis Wing" was the number-two choice, according to Dyer.

Shame its only been released for North American only :(

Happily it does seem that the new IP based restriction has not been put in place for XBLA titles as I was able to download with a US created sliver account.
