4th mission... what the hell?

On my way through the asteroid field surrounding Taylas little hideout I'm suddenly surrounded by a half dozen or more hostiles. What gives? I can't really read the messages because I have to concentrate on keeping my Tarsus in one piece.
Equipment:
2 Tachyon cannons
2 Plasteel hulls
3 Tungsten hulls
3 heatseeking missiles (needed the other 7 on my way back to the hideout)

Already tried with two wingmen, still to no avail.

Any insight?

Yes, I also find messages go way too fast during missions. Heatseaking missiles are for the birds; get Friend-Foe ones; worth every penny. In that mission, get the main guy first; the one that talks to you by alternating gunblasts and missiles. Spend 10 missiles on him if you have to, then get the others.

I had problems with that too. I solved mine with proton torpedoes. Fire them only when the enemy is coming right to you. 3-4 little ships. 5-6 for the bigger ones. Problem solved. You just can't by them from the pirate base so you better be prepared before going there.

And after the battle you can read the dialogue using page up/down keys to scroll to it.

Also, be advised that the asteroid feild is just as deadly for them as it is for you. Try to use that to your advantage and trick the AI into running into them.

how the hell does a freaking tarsus have mixed armor? and also....hulls? man...chalk up another one :( AND wingman? gah...

Okay, going to load up an older savegame, possibly before talking to Sandoval at all. Those militia really wear me down.

@Brad: Well, it's a question of money. I don't really have a few hundred thousand bucks to spend on another ship. But I can upgrade the one I have bit by bit :)

The Tarsus is not really all that bad a ship. I passed that mission with it after the 3rd try. Like I said, heatseaking missiles are no good; spend a few more credits and get friend-foe. But you will need a better ship in a few more missions, so might as well take a commercial break. You don't need to go back to sandoval. Just a recent savegame.
Do a lot of trading, until you save at least twice as much cash as the ship you're going to buy. Get the best reactor and shield the ship can take, and a B&S Omni radar. And you are best to spend the money on auto-tracking, than on getting powerful blasters. Lasers with autotracking are 10 times as effective as plasma guns without autotracking. More like 100 times... You can get autotracking upgrades at Perry.

Now, I wish somebody would help me get through this darned oxford mission, escorting the book shipment. 48 hours trying again and again; my right arm hurts bad...

Okay, I'll try that once I get home from work.
The heatseekers and tachyons were capable of beating the crap out of 7 (count them, seven) militia ships on the second run for Tayla although I had to get repairs for around 15.000 bucks by then.
Will get myself some FF missiles which should go nicely with the radar system I have bought that allows me finally to have colorcoded dots on my radar screen :)

Before I even think of taking on the campagn missions, I work on getting a Centurion and dressing it up with the best fixings. The Cent may not have a lot of cargo space, but if I remember the origional well enough the Cent's hold is more than enough for the fixer's cargo runs.
A Cent with tungsten armor and hull, autotracking on all gun mounts, tachyons, mesons, or ions on all four mounts plus matching turret, and the best shields and generator it can fit, plus a full loadout of friend-or-foe missiles is a dangerous thing.
Add an afterburner, and it can outrun militia Talons and Glads. Which is a good thing, cause if you fight them they'll chase you all over Gemini for the rest of the campagn.

I ran into a similar problem, and had to cancel the mission and go fundraising. I also had a problem that when Stilletos would attack me I couldn't beat them in the Tarsus b/c I couldn't damage them fast enough before they flew out of range. I was never in danger of dying, but I wasn't in a mood to afterburn all the way across the system to get to the jumppoint. Grr...

Anyway, I just got a Demon, so we'll see how that goes. Speed = good.

Yeah, I had the same problem. I just ran, since I didn't have any saves before then, and without missiles, I just couldn't take them all on. So, I learned that afterburning at only 600 KPH can save your life. :D

I think I might've also had a problem with the mission being duplicated in my mission computer, resulting in double-spawning enemies (and overlapped comm chatter).

Okay, using a nicely equipped Demon with four autotargetting tachyon guns took care of the issue.
Using the afterburner I literally raced out of the system which caused those pirates to spawn in 119CE instead :D

Yep, exactly what happened to me, too. Twice as many fighters as normal, and two of the ace piloted Demons.
