3rd Oxford Mission

Of course, I turned it off after I had completed the mission. This is much easier than hacking the files everytime you get stuck - and the probability of success is probably better, too. If all other fails, try this method. But you'll have to be a decent shot not to hit the drayman, or the mission will be over within seconds.

Speak to me, O Master, of how this may be done!

I was trying to Complete O3 with Plasma Cannons as well, but the problem is Demon's can outrun plasma bolts. Switch to Lasers and you can actually hit them as they are afterburning away. I still had to hire four wingmen, and try it a couple of times, but it went from impossible to doable. Hope this helps.

i've done this with 4x tachs and full loadout of protorps. remember escort mission protocol - stay close to the ship you're escorting and drive off anyone who attacks it. and if you're really in trouble, you can dock with it and at least get repairs done.

uuh, you mean how not to hit the drayman or how the method works?
I bet you want the method :)

Okay, first you need the program. I used cheat finder v1.3. Google for it.
1. In the trainer, choose vegastrike.exe (or was that priv.exe.. something that sounds right) and double click it.
2. Search value: enter how many torps you have and press start. A lot of adresses appear in the listbox.
3. Shoot one torp in the game, go back to the trainer and in the new value box, enter how many torps you have now. Press continue.
4. You should now have only one or two adresses in the box. Choose them, and press Insert. Then select them in the lower listbox, press change and check "freeze" (or change the value to something ridiculous like 1000).
5. Hasta la vista baby :)

Hope these instructions were helpful enough.
Note that this program can be used with almost any other game too. But I still warn you, don't use it unless you really, REALLY need it!

DISCLAIMER: I'm not responsible if this blows up your computer or anything else happens. Use at your own risk! :)

Why can the Galaxy only have a single 'on top' or Z+ turret? Why can't I get a rear turret, too?
The Galaxy can mount top and bottom turrets, but no rear turret. This is simply how the ship is designed. I also believe it leaves a dead spot (an uncovered field of fire) directly behind the ship, as the top turret cannot depress past the horizontal and the bottom turret cannot rise past the horizontal.

After trying it several times without auto tracking, I had to reload a saved game prior to accepting that mission and go buy auto tracking.

I then beat it the first try in a Demon with 4 mesons with auto tracking and some hired wingmen (only mission I had to use wingmen on). You can reload a saved game and it gives you a fresh mission set (i.e. a new chance at getting wingmen in Oxford).

All other missions then became a total joke in the Demon with auto-tracking, especially once you get fusion guns and the speed boosters in RF.

GOT IT! ;-)

After an estimated 30-50 attempts (hard to say when you've stopped counting a *long* time ago), I just succeeded in getting past the Ox3 mission without cheating, auto tracking, wingmen etc. Just a Centurion with tachies and torps.

In case anyone is interested, here's the strategy that finally worked for me:

I set skill level to "Easier" (the lowest setting) for two reasons: a) The second wave *always* consists of 3 Demons, i.e. never 5. b) The Demons don't fly as fast (not using their burner?), allowing you to follow them on their runs away from the drayman.

At this level, I get past the first 3 *every* time. My kill strategy is simple: Tap the armor with my guns, *without* hitting the armor/hull (at least too much). Then, on a run away from the ship, kill off the Demon with a handful of torpedos. Rinse and repeat.

I should note that I use a mouse (not drag-mode, which is horribly buggy) and was having a few problems turning quickly enough because a fast turn speed requires moving the cursor way off center (and, at least with my somewhat laggy system, that made it a b*tch to get back to center in one attempt). Increasing the mouse_exponent value in the vegastrike.config file from 1.5 to 1.7 helped a lot. There's also a mouse_sensitivity setting, but the exponent setting seemed to work better for me.

Good Luck! :)

The demon is faster? o.0 In my game the Centurion goes up to 500, and the Demon only to 450. Though that may be diff with burners....

I don't recall exactly how ramming worked in the original, but in the VegaStrike engine, it seems somewhat random. Physics dictate that two colliding ships suffer EXACTLY the same amount of damage (measured in energy). I've often had my front shields completely killed plus damage to the armor, while an opponent in a smaller ship (e.g. a Demon) has only suffered partial shield damage. I might also have seen the opposite, but for some reason I tend to notice such things more when they are not going my way ;-)

I do remember killing talons by ramming just for fun. Like killing those 4 random talons without firing a shot...

Ramming does next to nothing in damage in the Remake.

And good luck trying to ram a Demon. They're just a *tiny* bit faster than Talons.

O3

This mission is not that hard , i've finished it at the second time (mediuum diff without wingmen), but plasma doesn't affect demons that aren't targetting u (because of low speed it's best to use head-on).Try 4 tracked tachyons and reducing your sheild to 1/3 to get more power. Also friend or foe are better than torps because you can easily kill a damaged escaping demon , wich is not so easy with protons(but can be done).

we could turn up the ramming damage...
Ramming damage is certainly significantly lower than in the original. Plowing full speed (1000+) into a cap ship or an asteroid was instant death in the original. In the remake, you'll probably only lose your armor. (Although I must admit that I don't understand the distribution of damage between armor and hull - sometimes the hull takes a massive hit, while the armor escapes unscathed... and other times the opposite occurs).

I beat this one and a couple of others by hauling tail back to the nearest station with the enemy on my butt, and docking and saving the game. I'd come out, kill a few of them, jump back into dock for repairs and a save, and repeat as needed.

Enemy will follow you through jump points too, btw, so this works even if there's not a dock nearby. Just need a fast ship and a clear path back to a base point.

Where do you buy a demon? I've completed the plot, but never saw a Demon for sale that I can remember.

Sorry for lame self follow-up but that mission the enemy won't chase you until they have destroyed the target... BUT, you can dock in the Draman and restock/save, and it will stop the clock (and more important allow you to restock photons). That's how I beat it anyway. Tough level.

I tried that a couple of times after someone posted it here (although I consider it "cheating", in the sense that docking with cap ships was not in the original and certainly wasn't meant to be done in the middle of combat), but the drayman *never* has anything to sell. I could repair the ship (if it had any damage), but not get more proton torpedoes.

I think you should. BAsed on my memories, a Centurion in full burner should blow through a Talon like so much tissue paper. The Talon might eat all of the Centurion's shields, and maybe a little armor, but there would be no more Talon.

I remember seeing Talons accidentally slide into asteroids and blow up in the original. That was cool.

I did it with four tachyon cannons all with auto tracking and 20 FF missiles in a centurion. It worked for me. It should work for you.

After reading everything about this mission here, I beat it on my first attempt. I was in a Centurion with four tachyon cannons all with auto tracking, a tachyon turret, and 20 FF missiles.
Of course, those 4 confed escorts I hired on the mission before that didn't hurt either. Four broadswords all with turrets blazing eat Talons for breakfast and also do a number on most of the other ships. :p
