3ds max r3,4 compatibility

Is it possible to open a mesh file that was designed with Max r3 in 3DS Max 5? I think someone told me a long time ago if you could but now I forget for sure.

Newer versions can open older file formats, but you can't save back into them IIRC - you'll need to save it in the newer format.

However, exporting the file as a .3ds (rather than saving it as a .max file) will allow older versions of Max to open files created or modified in a newer version.
