Pretty sure Privateer was already far along in development when EA bought Origin. As for WC3, WC4, and Prophecy, all great games - but what happened after that? EA killed the franchise (and shortly thereafter, Origin Systems) - and this happened with Mr. Probst at the helm.

He is being replaced by Larry Probst, who was CEO of EA from 1991 - 2007 (so basically the guy who oversaw EA as it swallowed and killed Origin Systems and then proceeded to sit on all of the IP of the franchises we love until they are now dead and nearly forgotten). So no, I don't think...

So at one point late in the game Master Chief takes flight in a bomber-ish type vehicle called a "Broadsword". Is it my imagination or is that a shout out to Wing Commander?

It's not that the story sequences of Privateer 2 are bad... in fact they were always my favorite part of the game. The problem for me was always that the game clearly was never intended to be part of the Wing Commander universe when it was being developed and so should have never been marketed...
