It's the final stretch for Andrea Contato's second book on the history of Origin, Through the Moongate, from Wing Commander and Ultima VII to Portalarium. The project is nearing its €40,000 stretch goal, which adds an appendix full of personal interviews and anecdotes. Jumping into the €50...

Cool, that's some really nice attention to detail there!

Hong Kong Controversy Ensnares WC Vet (October 13, 2019)

We'll see.. :) There's just so much awful crap happening THIS WEEK that I'm surprised people have the leftover mental energy to invest so much in this story.

Hong Kong Controversy Ensnares WC Vet (October 13, 2019)

There's been a lot in the news lately about the Hong Kong protests and how various companies are reacting to those that support them, so it was only a matter of time until this story intersected with Wing Commander. Blizzard has been under fire this past week for their punishment of a...

    Defiance's Eyecandy Thread

Yeah, of course. My comment was just that there's no need to hold back and give "breathing space" to a project that hasn't posted an update in two months. :) Boring is relative. Troubleshooting arcane technical glitches might not be the most interesting news, but it could be more engaging...

Roberts Space Industries is celebrating the seventh anniversary of Star Citizen's launch today as Cloud Imperium continues to grind away on a number of difference fronts. A playable alpha is up to version 3.6 with a handful of playable first person, space combat and racing arenas. The SC...

Visual Novel Project Highlights Story of Classic WC (October 8, 2019)

I would say, yes, totally. I'm surprised this continues to be a question. Just watch and see: Jump to the 9 minute mark, for example. Angel gives a briefing about a patrol. At 9:55 Blair's in the cockpit, requesting priority communications. He informs Major Edmunds an attack is inbound to...

Visual Novel Project Highlights Story of Classic WC (October 8, 2019)

There isn't really comm story in WC1 or the Secret Missions, and it's pretty minimal in WC2. The in-flight cockpit cutscenes for the Special Operations video are all included, so I don't think it's really missing any story. Definitely not a significant impact.

Visual Novel Project Highlights Story of Classic WC (October 8, 2019)

SonataFantatica has started posting a series of "visual novels" that include just the story portions of the original Wing Commander games. So far he's completed Wing Commander 1, both Secret Missions 1&2 and Special Operations 1. This is an interesting concept and a surprising gap in...

Run All Old WC Games in DOSBox Walkthrough

It's the same actual DOS WC3 files in both versions, so differences in deadzone and graphical scaling sounds like a matter of DOSBox config settings. Some info on that

    Wing Commander Prophecy alt ending

That's a pretty nice Midway explosion... it's funny that Rachel is the one that fires the gun for some reason.

Armada Highlighted in German Promo Vid (October 4, 2019)

Deathsnake was recently trolling the archives of the German magazine PC Player and came across a neat video on Wing Commander Armada. The clip is brief and in German, but it represents what would have been super cutting edge at the time. There's a small handful of contemporary videos with WC3...

All Fighters Up! (October 1, 2019)

Artist Alan Gutierrez has posted another one of his fabulous Wing Commander scenes commissioned for the Wing Commander Customizable Card Game. It was mirrored and used as the art for the Magnum Launch card. It's hard to tell if this was just due to image processing, but there are possibly some...

Through the Moongate Part 2 Expands Stretch Goal Lineup (September 28, 2019)

After a stellar launch, the Kickstarter campaign for the Through the Moongate sequel has been fully funded and is well on its way towards a set of new stretch goals. First things first, we're (at the €50 and up level) getting a Wing Commander bookmark by Denis Loubet! The new secondary goals...

Freespace 2 is free on GoG right now.

I don't think there's one simple answer to that. Despite its glowing reviews, the game only sold about 25,000 in its initial year, which was like a tenth of the Prophecy numbers. That freaked out some publishers, which then pivoted from traditional WC or Freespace style games to try new...

    Defiance's Eyecandy Thread

Looks good! I think a number of fan projects surged to produce some awesome stuff for the Birthday... and then people were collectively worn out for the rest of summer. The news must go on, however!

Freespace 2 is free on GoG right now.

I think this is more of a critique of Prophecy/Secret Ops than an 'evolution of the series' type of thing. I would say WC2-4 all expanded what they did in terms of unique events that caused missions to unfold in new ways. From WC2 with in-flight refueling and jumping outsystem to WC4's limited...

Everybody Loves Excalibur 3D Prints (September 23, 2019)

Buddy Goodboy, Esq recently got a 3D printer and naturally set out to create a Wing Commander fighter as his first creation. After an experimental test print, this fine Excalibur was the result. It's a pretty nice example of what's possible today with fine panel lines etched right into the...
