It's been a while, but I think there is a way to give orders to the "extra" wingmen. You have to target them first and then you can order them home. In some ways it works like taunting an enemy. The option to communicate only shows up on a target.

Some games have a changelog that can be viewed in your library, but I didn't see one for WC3. The current installer version is 2.1.0.7, which is the one that I have from Nov. 2014. It looks like it hasn't changed, at least not what you download from the library.
