    Making it harder....

Ok, somebody has to say this...the correct way to make Secret Ops harder is to install Standoff.

What's your least favorite craft to dogfight with?

The Dralthi is a pain, but in most cases it can be dealt with. There are a few tricks involved: Don't try and chase the Dralthi at afterburner. You're unlikely to hit it and it waste burner fuel you need for evading missiles. The best times to hit a Dralthi are at the beginning and end of it's...

    Major victory in Standoff?

The mission in which Blair appears is, IMO, the hardest in Standoff. I eventually had to give up and knock the difficulty down to Hero in order to get through it (keep meaning to go back and have another attempt at Nightmare, not gotten around to it yet). It is also sufficiently epic that...

    On Broadswords...

Is there any particular reason the WCPedia and Encyclopaedia articles for the A-17 Broadsword list it with a crew of 1? I'm sure somebody must have had a good one at some point, but WC2 seems to contradict it fairly thoroughly. I know that Maverick and Angel like each other, but the two...

    Concordia Sunk

It's a barquentine. You can hardly call it a classic design. Now if she had a proper barque rig or a fore-and-aft rig I might be willing to agree with "classic", but not that weird late Victorian aberration.

    Whatever happend to....

It could be argued not to directly contradict it inasmuch as Doomsday may be just listing the survivors of the attack on K'Tithrak Mang, whereas Hunter didn't fly in that assault, having transferred off, well, he says "the day previously" but given they were obviously in Kilrathi space at that...

What's your least favorite craft to dogfight with?

Yeah, this is my opinion. The (nightmare) Sorthak is a bit more dangerous than the Vaktoth due to more firepower, that's about it. A T-bolt can outmaneuvre it and the rear turret is nowhere near as accurate as that on the Paktahn, so tailing is less of a problem. An Arrow can just fly rings...

What's your least favorite craft to dogfight with?

This seems as good a place as any to comment on how I'm discovering WC3 to be an entirely different game on Nightmare. When the AI is allowed to use its burners it gets a lot more competent at flying the lighter ships. The Vaktoth, meanwhile, suffers greatly without the superior AI it benefits...

What's your favorite line from the game?

Just checked. Freyers says "the ejected pilot", though he does know the gender because Bradshaw said "send an SAR after her" with the previous line.

What's your least favorite craft to dogfight with?

Having just started playing through WC3 on Nightmare, I would like to note: GODSDAMN IT DRALTHI! Now, even on Nightmare, the flying pancake isn't actually a threat, but endless ImRec missile spam is really annoying. AI doesn't need a missile lock to fire on Nightmare and every Dralthi pilot...

SM2 Drayman defence in Firekka system

Yeah, it's standard across WC1. It comes up especially in SM2 because it's the easiest of the games to make the Kilrathi run in - a wave with a Drakhai in it will often run if you kill the Drakhai.

    Pushing the envelope

I'm not entirely sure what you're driving at here, but if you think that trying to hit something with a beam that travels at c when it's running away from you at 0.9c is going to be a problem, you're wrong. One of the wonderfully counterintuitive results you get out of special relativity is...

    Pushing the envelope

I am unsure whether this paragraph means you did or didn't play Frontier (Elite II).

What's your least favorite craft to dogfight with?

As for Standoff, well, nothing will ever quite be as annoying as trying to take out a Vatari in a Stiletto. But if we ignore the Vatari as a supership, then there's no single fighter in Standoff that really annoys me - the problems in Standoff are usually numbers and tactics. Sartha with their...

    Who outranks who?

Didn't the Emperor order all the human slaves on Kilrah to be executed during Fleet Action, in a fit of rage due to Jukaga being entirely too human?

What's your least favorite craft to dogfight with?

WC1: Rapier, though the Krant has a certain "oh go away already" factor due to not being remotely dangerous but taking a while to chew through. WC2: Gothri, rear turrets are annoying WC3: In an Arrow, the Paktahn; in a T-bolt, the Vaktoth, just because of irksome AI bait-and-switch tactics...

    Who outranks who?

There's actually two possible answers to that question. In general, two officers of the same rank are accorded privilege according to seniority - ie, who had the rank first. Blair was, I think, promoted to Colonel just prior to the K'Tithrak Mang operation, then reduced in rank to Captain as a...

    Missile Gripes Pt.1

Hitting AI targets with dumbfires is easy because human pilots generally come up close enough behind enemy fighters before firing that the enemy barely has a chance to evade. If the AI did this it would make for a rather dull (also, impossible) game, so they fire from much further away, giving...

    Missile Gripes Pt.1

I had a brief look today - loaded up Standoff, went for Wild Weasel as a mission that would have a ton of missiles flying around, turned on Invincibility and switched to the object camera. I saw Sparrow (on Nightmare, so the AI is about as good as it'll get) apparently jink around a dumbfire...

    Missile Gripes Pt.1

[dramatic villain voice] The misunderstanding is all yours, my friend [/dvv] I meant "despite the fact that dumbfires in Standoff are supposedly identical to dumbfires in WC2, I dislike WC2 dumbfires and would never use anything else in Standoff if you let me" . A dumbfire lock warning in...
