Roland MT-32 Emulation Still Beating (May 10, 2013)

The soundblaster was a Yamaha OPL2 (FM synth, like Adlib) and a DAC, and both were combined together in an analog mixer prior to the output amplifiers. Sounds are basically very simple devices - they're just the audio chips wired straight to the ISA bus, with a tiny amount of logic gates to...

RetroN 5 Plays SNES, S Famicon & GBA WC Console Games (May 4, 2013)

Yeah. The adapters usually have a spot on the circuit board for an optional NES001 chip as well (this was the way NIntendo prevented third parties from making clone games that lead to the game crash a couple of years earlier). Of course, the joke really is the spring contacts on the NES were a...

RetroN 5 Plays SNES, S Famicon & GBA WC Console Games (May 4, 2013)

Just like NES and Famicom - they were different cartridge shapes and connector sizes, but basically the same console. Though the Famicom lacks the NES001 chip. I have a few of those adapters, and one of my carts actually has the adapter built inside the cart.

Other DRM Free Download Sources like GOG

Humble Bundle tends to be DRM free, mostly. They did run a DRM'd one (THQ bundle) but that was the exception rather than the rule. It's not all the time, and you're in luck as they're in the middle of another one. http://www.humblebundle.com/

Galaxy on Fire 2 HD Temporarily Free (February 11, 2013)

The only Android versions are the ones for tablets running a Tegra 3 (e.g., Nexus 7) or the Sony Xperia Play. There are no versions for general Android devices.

    Beneath A Steel Sky

Ah. that's it. BaSS was made available for SCUMMVM a decade ago. http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Beneath_a_Steel_Sky

    Beneath A Steel Sky

BaSS has been free on GoG for a LONG time now - I think it was one of their freebies since they officially launched. I believe Sierra made it free a few years before GoG - it was one of the freely available games for the Sierra Game Engine emulator years before that as well. Name escapes me at...

    Baen E-book publishing changes

Explains the forced DRM stuff. After all, I've downloaded plenty of DRM-free eBooks from Barnes and Noble... Though I have to admit, I sort of suspected it was Amazon.

Halo 4 Kicks Off New Sci-fi Trilogy (November 6, 2012)

I'm taking you're referring to the Karen Traviss books (Glasslands, The Thursday War)? I have them, but haven't gotten around to reading them (I'm actually doing the Greg Bear ones, which are the Forerunner saga).

Halo 4 Kicks Off New Sci-fi Trilogy (November 6, 2012)

Spartan Ops maybe, but that's about it. Though I'm kinda of a lone wolf.

Halo 4 Kicks Off New Sci-fi Trilogy (November 6, 2012)

Yeah. it's just internet whining. It's because none of what Halo Reach did affected existing canon - at best it was a minor footnote, like Halo ODST. Probably some whining was involved because there was an interview with someone at Bungie I think that said they'd break canon to deliver a better...

Halo 4 Kicks Off New Sci-fi Trilogy (November 6, 2012)

Well, I meant I could use a lot less of it - Halo 4 seems to use it to a huge extent - to distraction really. The other games tend to be far more conservative, and even the Source demo didn't make it so your entire screen washed out in glare. Of course, I suppose I'm missing the "sunglasses"...

Halo 4 Kicks Off New Sci-fi Trilogy (November 6, 2012)

I dunno, I could live without the HDR, lens flare and bloom to be honest. Though, I really miss the old-style Bungie grunts. Gruntpocalypse is just that much more fun with the irrelevant commentary the grunts add. These Covenant remind me more of Halo 1 enemies than anything else. And yeah...

Halo 4 Kicks Off New Sci-fi Trilogy (November 6, 2012)

The "problem" with Halo is it's a multi-media type story. There's a lot of Halo books that serve as backstops ("The Fall of Reach" is a prequel to Halo 1 - "Halo Reach" takes place around the later part of this book), book versions of the game ("The Flood" is Halo 1 in book form), followed by...

RSI Crowd Funding Campaign Kicks Off (October 10, 2012)

I didn't mean I wanted to buy my way in, but I like some of the stuff in the higher tiers - would be nice if I could have a choice and give 'em all a try to see what I'm more suited for, but have them in the hangar for the heck of it :).

    RSI Pledge Thread

Yeah, I want the wingnut package, but want to pledge more... I want the higher pledge level stuff AND the lower level stuff like many Kickstarters...

RSI Crowd Funding Campaign Kicks Off (October 10, 2012)

I suppose it's a really stupid question - but any option to pay more and get the ship at that level and the HOrnet?

Suggestions on digitizing WC4 trailer from 35mm film

Most movies are done in scope these days - I can't remember if the WC movie itself was scoped or not. Then there's the audio thing - there's a stereo optical track along the side (you can clearly see it) - you do need to correlate the audio as it can be a few frames ahead or behind depending on...

21st Century IRC Client Overview (August 31, 2012)

Perhaps, though I know I switched when I switched from my old PC to a newer one many years ago (about a decade ago). I guess I just gave up on it when others were doing what I wanted, and that Xchat was free versus shareware and could do multiple servers on one client. Got kinda fed up having to...
