I think owning more than one ship may get confusing. You would have to remember where you left the other one. It would also make it difficult to move the "stored" ship to a new location. Maybe if you could trade a ship with a wingman it would work but it makes the game simpler to only own one...

I had the same problem. All I did was sent an e-mail and they activated my account. I never did get the confermation e-mail, not even in my bulk mail (which I get about 200 e-mails in that file per day).
