But that's what's great about the WCIV missions: you have a purpose . You don't go though mission after mission blowing up $@^$!%!#@ and come back to the next story part. What you do affects what happens and that's what is appealling about WC in general. As for newbies, WCIV was my first game...

Sounds like a driver problem. Did you try reinstalling DirectX or the video card drivers?
