A few months back, I ended up replacing my sound card from similar issues. It would crackle to hell and back when playing encoded audio, but pure CD and DVD audio were fine. I did the same thing you did, plugged in headphones to the card and was relieved the speakers weren't cracking on me...

Actually, it doesn't look out of place...looks like an improvement, at least to me. Like it's venting for engine cooling or somesuch. I quite agree with Wedge, the lighting makes a huge difference in detail levels, even if it's more perception than much else. This is awesome to see how well...
