Who DAT Tapes? (August 11, 2012)

If you do figure it out I'll be interested - I think I still have a WCIV DAT tape as well. No idea what's on it either but I'm pretty sure it's a backup of stuff I worked on...

Taking the Party IRL (July 28, 2011)

That's DEFINITELY an old set of pictures - I can tell because it's clearly been raining in the photos, and we haven't had that in months. Coming to Austin, eh? You guys HAVE see this haven't you? :-)

    WC:CD "Midway Class Carrier"

Oh, one more note: to the fellow who was wondering what the purpose of the giant fins at the back of the ship were: in my original design for the Midway the large pod at the back of the ship was supposed to contain living quarters, mess halls, all the "people" related parts of the ship. There...

    WC:CD "Midway Class Carrier"

I really like the bulkiness of the new version. I have to say, I never really cared for the antennae and such that were added for Arena; I felt they diminished the scale and made the old gal look a bit like the Cygnus from "The Black Hole", but all in all this is a nice piece of work!

Frank Savage at the PDC (June 23, 2009)

Dang - I think Frank's been wearing that same shirt and vest since the mid-'90's! I am amazed it hasn't fallen apart into threads and rags...

    Pirates!!! F-38 Talon Paper model

Actually, given my workload and all I have been slower about getting stuff out than I'd like, but I do still the original Alias models (textures and all) for these ships: Murphy Destroyer, Devastator, Midway, Stingray, Shrike, and Vindicator. I'd be happy to make all those available if anyone...

    Pirates!!! F-38 Talon Paper model

Sigh...still waiting to see one of my ships available! Maybe I could bribe you with some original textures...

Happy Birthday, Wing Commander (March 12, 2009)

Would it be impolitic of me to point out that technically, no one at Origin worked on it? Chris took a lot of his team with him when he went to DA, but he and his production folks were long gone from Origin when the movie came out.

Making the Games: Pelican Artwork (November 16, 2008)

Howard, good eye. This is definitely NOT a render of a hi-res version, though I still suspect that there was such at some point. Definitely looks like someone used a texture fill in photoshop to color in a previously drawn or rendered model; the panel lines don't follow the lines of the ship at all.

Making the Games: Pelican Artwork (November 16, 2008)

We got all of the textures for in-game models from renders of the high-end versions of the ships. Pretty much everything was built as a cinematic model, then we had a library of ships that we could pick and choose from to drop into the backgrounds of cinematics. It's also possible this WAS used...

Okay, I got your answer: That'd be Dave Plunkett...

Making the Games: Shadow Force Sketches (November 2, 2008)

Any indication of who the artist was on these?

Making the Games: Wing Commander IV Fighters (October 29, 2008)

Doing those textures was so very fun - and the results were so nice! It was a shame we couldn't do the same degree of detail on Prophecy, but it was just not to be.

Making the Games: The Shadow Force - Confederation (October 25, 2008)

By his own admission, Feng wasn't doing humans that well at the time - it's pretty apparent in these drawings. Of course if you check out his website and his recent stuff you can see he's spent a lot of effort getting better at that, and kicks butt now - but he wasn't really comfortable with the...

Making the Games: Kilrathi Multi-Role/Freighter (October 19, 2008)

I remember thinking at the time these were done that the Kilrathi ships were the one place where Feng really got it, where the stuff he was designing dovetailed beautifully in with the established look-and-feel of the WC universe...

Making the Games: Confederation Fighter (October 15, 2008)

I remember working with Feng on these, and feeling incredibly frustrated: he's So Dam Good! He's got more incredible drawing talent in one little finger on his off hand than I have in my whole body, but we just couldn't get on the same page as far as design philosophy: to most of us old-timers...

Making the Games: Confederation Cruiser (October 14, 2008)

I remember Feng doing some character sketches for one of those lost games too - I wonder if those are knocking around anywhere?

    Then What Didn't Happen? (August 11, 2008)

Wow! I had totally forgotten about this one. Unless I am very much mistaken there was some concept art by Feng Zhu done for this project...I remember several character sketches that aren't included in this doc...
