General Troubleshooting. i.e. This is way too much information.

Card Specifications Notes

***DISCLAIMER***
These are settings which we have found allow this card to work best with our games. This is not the be-all-end-all of how to set up this sound card in DOS. Should you experience any difficulties with the settings and suggestions that we provide, please contact the MANUFACTURER for more in-depth technical support. Remember, the second you feel uncomfortable about tinkering with your system's configuration, contact a tech. The important thing here is to get your game running, not to screw your system up like some do-it-yourself spice rack. With that disclaimer out of the way, this page will start with the basic CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT lines you should use in your shortcut or bootdisk to initialize your card for use in DOS. It will be followed by more specific techinical specifications that you might find handy. Good Luck! --Origin CS Web Team
Config.sys

device=c:\ultrasnd\ultrinit.sys ultrasnd=220,1,1,11,5

Autoexec.bat

path=%path%;c:\ultrasnd

set ultrasnd=220,1,1,11,5

set blaster=a220 i5 d1 t1

set gusmod=c:\ultrasnd\mod

c:\ultrasnd\ultrinit.exe -e

c:\ultrasnd\sbos {tsr required for sound blaster emulation.}

Port / IRQ / DMA Settings

These settings are controlled by the environment settings in the SET BLASTER line. However, the I/O address is jumper set on the card. Ultrainit is important to configure the card properly. The joystick functionality in DOS can be verified by using the JOYCOMP program and selecting GRAVTEST. If it is not working and ULTRINIT include the -e switch, you should contact GRAVIS.

C:\ULTRASND\ULTRINIT -x -y -z

where x, y, z can be :

o : leave output enabled after it resets the card

m : leave microphone input enabled

l : leave line level input enabled

d : disable the joystick port

e : enable the joystick port

Defaults:

I/O : 220 (First I/O digital)

IRQ : 5

DMA : 1 (8 Bit DMA sound channel)

Set-up

Sound Blaster/Clone with General MIDI

Volume

Because this card uses software to emulate Sound Blaster, and our games should be using Sound Blaster emulation, it is necessary to add a switch to the software emulation program line. If you are having trouble getting sound try changing the SBOS line.

C:\ULTRASND \SBOS -vx

where x is [0(min)-32(max)]

EX: C:\ULTRASND\SBOS -v32

Specifications

Stereo

8 bit sound /16 bit WSS

GENERAL MIDI

FM sound / Digitized Sound EMULATION

Notes

This card has very unstable Sound Blaster emulation. It uses software to run SB emulation basically because it is a MIDI card. Longbow, in particular, does not support the Gravis Ultra Sound.

Questions

Why won't my Gravis Ultra Sound work with DirectX?
Well, you probably just need to update the Win '95 drivers for your card. Click HERE to go to the contact information for Gravis.
